Your tasks
The Institute of Biomedical Informatics (BI-K) & Medical data integration center (MeDIC) of the University Hospital Cologne are currently searching for a Research Data Manager / Data Steward. Our aim is to make clinical routine data available for clinical research and to support clinicians and researchers in managing their data following FAIR principles. These principles provide a framework that guide researchers to make their data Findable, Accessible,Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR). As Research Data Manager / Data Steward, you will work in the excellent interdisciplinary research environment of Cologne, support the scientific exchange between basic science and clinical research and foster national and international collaborations. In particular your tasks include:
Research Data Management Concept and Service Development: - Development and conception of solutions for clinical data delivery for medical research projects
- Implementation of data standards and regulations
- Evaluation of existing IT solutions for research data management
- Support the implementation of new databases and software
Data Stewardship: - Development of data management plans for national and international research consortia following FAIR principles
- Design of data collection forms, implementation and testing of new data collection processes and data curation pipelines
- Support in consolidation / harmonization of data and quality control processes
- Training and support of clinicians and scientists regarding the implementation of FAIR principles
Project Coordination and Communication: - Coordination of various data management related project activities between MeDIC and related partners such as CECAD and registries
- Collaboration and effective communication with researchers, clinicians and technical teams
Your Profile
- PhD or MSc in natural sciences, biomedical sciences, health care or bioinformatics / informatics
- Experience with medical data preferable
- Knowledge of managing research data and/or privacy-sensitive data, or willing to develop yourself in this area
- Knowledge of relational databases (such as SQL) and data modelling would be of advantage
- Quick learner, self-motivated, independent and goal-oriented working style
- Very good organizational, analytical thinking and strong problem-solving skills
- Good communication skills, enjoying cross-departmental collaboration and exchange within the team
- Very good knowledge in English (written and oral)
- Knowledge in German would be of advantage

As Research Data Manager / Data Steward, you will be a member of the MeDIC / BI-K research data management team. As part of the Medical Informatics Initiative (MII), and the national Network of University Medicine (NUM), the University Hospital Cologne established a medical data integration center (MeDIC), The main goal of the MeDIC is to create the technical and organizational prerequisites for the use of clinical routine data in medical research. The MeDIC allows the transfer of data from a wide range of clinical information systems, the integration and processing of clinical data, and ensuring data quality and compliance to data governance.
The Institute of Biomedical Informatics (BI-K) is a newly founded and dynamic Institute at the Medical Faculty of the University of Cologne. Its mission is to support data-driven transformation in medicine and develop novel artificial intelligence technologies for personalized medicine. You will be part of an agile, innovative and interdisciplinary team that brings together expertise from different disciplines to create synergies.
