Engineer for the development and construction of scientific devices

The Mechanics department supports scientists in particle and astroparticle physics in their national and international research projects. Some of these projects are, for example, the two X-ray lasers FLASH and European XFEL at DESY Hamburg, our in-house linear accelerator PITZ at the Zeuthen site or international experiments at the LHC particle accelerator at CERN, the neutrino telescope IceCube at the South Pole, the gamma ray observatories H.E.S.S. in Namibia and the UV space camera ULTRASAT.

Our tasks include 3D designs, the preparation of production drawings and documentation, the definition of technological processes, planning, construction and assembly, as well as the commissioning of scientific equipment.

About your role:

• Development and design of complex mechanical components, assemblies, systems and equipment for particle and astroparticle physics experiments
• Carrying out design-related calculations
• Preparation of production documents and documentation accompanying the design
• Purchasing of components for technical devices and systems
• Independent production support
• Supervision and realisation of assembly and testing
• Collaboration in international co-operations

About you:

• Completed university of applied sciences education, e.g. Bachelor of Engineering specialising in scientific instrument engineering, general mechanical engineering or physical engineering or equivalent qualification
• Very good expertise in the design and development of mechanical systems, preferably also with practical experience in the field
• Good knowledge of CAD (ideally SIEMENS TC NX10) and FEM ANSYS desirable
• Good expertise in UHV, measurement and electrical engineering and sensor technology
• Responsible and independent way of working
• Good written and spoken German/English skills for working in international teams required
