The focus of the DLR Institute for Data Science in Jena is to find solutions for the major challenges of the digitalisation age. The research focuses on the areas of data extraction and mobilisation, data management and preparation, and data analysis and intelligence.

The Working Group “Metadata Management” addresses topics in the area of semantic descriptions of data, development of ontologies and semantically enhanced systems. These topics are addressed in both DLR-internal as well third-party-funded projects.

The advertised position is in particular concerned with provenance data at the boundary between physical and digital world. It is part of a project in the area of circular economy that develops and evaluates methods to reduce the amount of primary resources in various application areas.

Your task is the development of ontologies to describe the provenance of real-world objects. Besides the definition of vocabularies, this includes developing models for provenance data and to develop corresponding tools that allow for fine-grained access control to the collected provenance information. You will be contributing to the digitalisation of manufacturing and to saving valuable resources on the path to a circular economy!

Your tasks include

• requirement engineering together with our project partners
• literature research and identifying state-of-the-art approaches in the areas of provenance and access control in semantic models
• development of vocabularies and ontologies for the provenance of real-world objects
• design and development of tools to establish access control on provenance data
• evaluation and improvement of approaches and implementations
• publication and presentation of results at national and international conferences and within the project consortium
• supervision of students

• completed academic university degree in Computer Science, Mathematics or related areas (e.g., data science)
• basic experience in independently addressing complex research challenges.
• proven programming skills (e.g., JavaScript, Python or Java.)
• joy of working in a scientific environment
• advanced skills in both written and spoken English
• basic skills in both written and spoken German
• willingness to travel (national/international)
• experience in working with provenance data and relevant models (e.g., W3C PROV) is advantageous
• experience GUI and UX design and implementation is a advantageous
• applied experience working with knowledge graphs and related technologies (e.g., RDF and SPARQL) is a desirable
