In a typical software architecture for self-driving vehicles, the path planning and execution is structured hierarchically, with a high-level path planning and trajectory generation, and a motion control unit that executes the desired plan using the vehicle's actuators. The hierarchical structure allows the upper layer to handle challenging traffic scenarios that require long planning horizons. The translation of the desired vehicle trajectory from the planning module into actuator commands is then handled by the motion controller in the lower layer. Careful design of the individual components and their interfaces is required to achieve a safe overall system with high performance.
