Work Environment

In the body design department, the body in white is developed with the help of the finite element method for its crash suitability and vibration comfort. In order to release a vehicle to the market, a vehicle has to comply with safety rules and regulations set by the regulatory bodies. Currently, compliance with these rules and regulations is demonstrated through physical testing, where measurements are performed on full scale vehicle crashes. This is an expensive and timely process that can only be performed in the late stage of the development process of a vehicle. To mitigate the limitations of physical testing, Audi’s aim for the future is to base certification on computational simulations instead of physical testing. Virtual testing of a full vehicle model requires accurate predictions of the simulation results. In the context of crash simulations this is a challenging task as conventional methods to produce quantitative response of the vehicle crash response are computationally too expensive.

To address the constraints posed by concurrent technologies, the connected PhD project has devised a procedure comprising two distinct components:

1. Validation. The full scale simulation is validated using a systematic hierarchal validation strategy for large, multi-component structures.

2. Prediction quality. Probabilistic response of the simulation results are obtained by means of surrogate models.

Job Purpose/Role

The internship project will consist of a contribution to the validation part of the virtual certification procedure.

• Setting up and performing validation experiments on CMS structure.
• Validation of the simulation models using PamCrash.
• Sensitivity analysis of the material properties on the simulation results by means of a parametric study.

Key Requirements/Skills/Experience

• Current or completed studies in mechanical engineering or similar
  • CAE experience is required. (PamCrash, Ansa, Python)
  • CAD experience is desirable. (Catia)
  • Office experience is required.
