Free-space Optical (FSO) communications enable the implementation of communication systems with very high data rates, maintaining small terminal sizes and low power consumption at the same time. In the past years, DLR’s Optical Satellite Links (OSL) department has been developing a system to transmit data through an optical link reliably. This implies the ability to protect the data from the atmospheric disturbances that cause the degradation of the optical signal. These disturbances are caused by the variation of the physical conditions of the atmosphere in time and space along the optical path, such as changes in temperature, wind speed, etc.
OSL designed some years ago a VHDL system to provide FSO communication at 1 Gbps. This system is still used in several experiments and new ideas of improvements have been proposed. The design also includes a small piece of C code that provides statistics and housekeeping information used for scientific purposes.
In this internship your tasks will be to implement the chosen new ideas in the design as well as to perform some sustainability tasks in the existing code. You will also be involved in testing the design in the lab and then install in at some experimental locations.
