The Design Group Lead is responsible for overseeing and guiding a team of Design Engineers in a creative and collaborative environment. The Design Group Lead should foster innovation, mentor team members, and maintain a productive work environment. He/she reports to the Design Department Manager, works closely with Pratt and Whitney and MTU Munich customers, supporting the 30K, NGPF, and OCE engine programs. The Design Group Lead is responsible for managing resource activities and supervising the employees on the team.
The Group Lead role combines design expertise with leadership skills to ensure that projects meet high-quality standards, are delivered on time, and align with the company's strategic vision.
Essential Functions Include:
- Ensure Project Milestones are Met and Provide Strong Leadership
- Support group structure, objectives and team strategy to ensure company objectives are met
- Be proactive in supporting team needs, identify problems that arise and course correct as needed in support of meeting the teams’ operational needs
- Provide feedback to Manager on individual and team performance; initiative improvement measures or recognition
- Motivate team to maintain positive momentum on projects
- Provide regular updates on the team's progress, project status, and key performance metrics to Manager
- Provide creative direction, guidance, and mentorship to a team of designers to foster their growth and maintain high standards of design.
- Drive the Project Management and Financial Responsibilities for the Design Group
- Perform contract reviews, complete ERP project management, and monitor budgets
- Support the Design Manager in annual Operational Planning
- Support sales and individual group target for sales.
- Understand KPI’s and how the sales figures are collected and monitored
- Review Paid Time Off (PTO) and flex credit balances of resources
- Provide Supervision
- Approval of employee charging in system (NetSuite)
- Answer questions and resolve issues brought forth by team members
- Foster group cohesion within and across Design Group and other MTU disciplines
- Ensure all tools for daily operation are available to the Group
- Conduct meaningful 1:1’s with group members on a regular basis
- Complete annual feedback summaries for direct reports, working closely with Manager on development plans
- Support the Design Department Strategy
- Assist in recruiting, interviewing, training, and long term departmental planning
- Support development and advancement activities of Group
- Support the advancement of the Group’s technical competencies in conjunction with Technical Lead
- Identify areas for skills development within the design team and implement training or upskilling opportunities.
- Promote department transfers that will enhance development of our engineers
- Establish Effective Engineering Relationships and Collaboration with our Customers
- Establish regular communication with PW CIPT leads to ensure quality of service remains high and identify additional areas for Design support
- Foster relationships with MTU Munich Design colleagues
Requirements for this position include:
- Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree in relevant field (Mechanical, Aerospace, Manufacturing Engineering)
- 10+ years of relevant experience in Mechanical or Aerospace Design Engineering
- 2+ years of demonstrated experience in a cross functional leadership role preferred
- Ability to coach, mentor, and empower team members to succeed
- Ability to communicate effectively with team members and leadership
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects and make decisions under pressure
- Strong organizational, planning, and presentation skills; strong written and verbal communication skills
- Take initiative and assume responsibility
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Project, PowerPoint, and Outlook
- German language skills a plus
- Occasional international travel is required
- Eligible to work in the United States without Sponsorship
