The aviation sector is set to experience strong growth in volumes over the coming years. Therefore, the environmental impact of aviation needs to decrease in the long term in line with the growing demand. In response to the European Commission's Green Deal, aiming to reduce transport emissions by 90% by 2050, the ecological assessment of new technologies becomes increasingly important.

As a master student in our team, you will play a crucial role in the life cycle assessment (LCA) of two syngas generation pathways for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production from biosphere CO 2 , freshwater and renewable electricity. The first technology is co-electrolysis using solid-oxide electrolyzer (SOEL), or high-temperature electrolyzer, which is able to generate syngas directly from the feedstocks. The second option is water electrolysis using the state-of-the-art alkaline electrolyzer (AEL), supported by a reverse-water gas shift (RWGS) reactor. The latter configuration allows syngas generation stepwise, H 2 production by AEL and then CO conversion from CO 2 and H 2 by RWGS. The available Aspen Plus® models of these technologies will be adjusted and the simulation results are the basis for calculation.

This role involves conducting a comprehensive LCA to evaluate the environmental impact of these innovative technologies. The study will also observe the environmental impact of the stack exchange due to the intermittency of renewable electricity availability. In addition, sensitivity analyses of some technical design variables on the global warming potential (GWP) and one other impact category will be carried out.

Look forward to a fulfilling job with an employer who appreciates your commitment and supports your personal and professional development. Our unique infrastructure offers you a working environment in which you have unparalleled scope to develop your creative ideas and accomplish your professional objectives. Our human resources policy places great value on a healthy family and work-life-balance as well as equal opportunities for persons of all genders (f/m/x). Individuals with disabilities will be given preferential consideration in the event their qualifications are equivalent to those of other candidates.
