Job description
(Senior) Scientist - Mechanical Actuation Technologies (80-100%)
Take your next career step at ABB with a global team that is energizing the transformation of society and industry to achieve a more productive, sustainable future.
At ABB, we have the clear goal of driving diversity and inclusion across all dimensions: gender, LGBTQ+, abilities, ethnicity and generations. Together, we are embarking on a journey where each and every one of us, individually and collectively, welcomes and celebrates individual differences.
At ABB Corporate Research we explore novel technologies and innovative methods to enhance the core business strengths of ABB, a company with a long history in innovation and technology. We advance the frontiers of modern technology. Closely aligned with the needs of our business areas and divisions, we collaborate and foster creative solutions to practical engineering challenges. Our accomplishments significantly influence technology trends and future products, and they are highly visible to the global research community.
As an expert of dynamic mechanisms and actuators, are you passionate about developing future-proof actuation concepts that help the transition towards a sustainable and reliable distribution of clean energy? Would you like to apply your expertise in a challenging & fascinating environment in a global and diverse company?
Then, join our team of highly motivated researchers and students as a scientist for mechanical actuation technologies, and help us shape the future! In cross-functional project teams, you will cooperate with other researchers inside and outside the company and apply your expertise to conceptualize, optimize, demonstrate, and validate novel ideas. Technology demonstrators based on your work will serve as starting points for subsequent development of ABB’s next-generation products. We expect that you show a high motivation, ownership mindset, hands-on attitude, and initiative to come up with new ideas that tackle today’s challenges.

This position reports to
R&D Team Lead
Your responsibilities
- As part of our industrial research team, you develop novel, future-proof mechanical actuation systems for a wide and versatile range of ABB products.
- You conceptualize, design, and verify fast-moving mechanisms and actuation systems by proposing and applying advanced mathematical modeling and simulation methods with special focus on the dynamic mechanical performance.
- You validate technology demonstrators together with a prototyping team by (co-)designing test rigs, selecting sensors and data acquisition systems, defining and/or running the tests and analyzing the measurement results.
- You lead R&D projects with cross-functional teams in close cooperation with ABB divisions, customers, and universities.
- You identify new trends in your field by observation of markets and of university research and identify application areas of new technologies within ABB products.
- You come up with innovative solutions and secure intellectual property.
- You present research results globally across the ABB group and at scientific conferences or via journals.
Your background
- You hold a PhD degree, preferably in mechanical engineering, or in a related field, with a strong track record of scientific publications. Candidates with a M.Sc. or equivalent degree and relevant job experience are also welcome to apply.
- You are an experienced researcher in applied mechanics, covering stress and strength analysis as well as kinematics and dynamics of mechanisms, or in material science with focus on structural behavior of mechanisms.
- You are proficient in dynamic structural mechanics and FEM simulation tools in the context of mechanisms (e.g., ANSYS, ABAQUS, COMSOL). Experience in the field of fatigue analysis is beneficial.
- You are skilled in conceptual as well as 3-D mechanical design (e.g., SolidWorks, Creo). Knowledge of manufacturing methods will be beneficial.
- Advanced skills in computational multi-body dynamics will be considered a strong plus, e.g., using software tools such as MSC (Hexagon) ADAMS, supported by a solid analytical understanding of related equation systems.
- You bring a hands-on engineering mentality supported by strong laboratory skills, i.e., demonstrable experience in designing, commissioning, and running dedicated test setups followed by post-processing.
- Experience in (third-party funded) project management will be considered a plus.
- First leadership experience will be considered a plus.
- You have high interest in exploring new fields of research and technology outside your own field of expertise, paired with a collaborative, solution-oriented approach.
- You are fluent in English (written and spoken); German language skills are beneficial but not a prerequisite.
Benefits
