The Institute of Aerodynamics and Flow Technology is a leading research institute in the fields of aircraft and vehicle aerodynamics, aircraft aeroacoustics, aerospace aerothermodynamics and wind energy research. In the C²A²S²E department (Centre for Computer Applications in AeroSpace Science and Engineering) we develop advanced numerical methods and software solutions for aerospace applications, from multidisciplinary analysis and design capabilities to virtual certification.

In addition to the physical modelling of complex flows and the development of advanced solution algorithms for numerical flow simulation, we address the integration of all relevant disciplines. We develop efficient optimization strategies and methods for data-driven modelling and simulation together with methods for quantifying uncertainties on the basis of higher-order methods. The customization of numerical methods for optimal efficiency on high-performance computer clusters is of particular importance to the department. In addition, we provide simulation capabilities and software solutions for numerical flow simulations, multidisciplinary analysis and optimization as well as data-driven modelling.

Quantum computing, as a new paradigm for solving such highly complex computational problems, offers completely new possibilities for the future of aviation. In this context, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) supports young scientists through the Quantum Computing Initiative, a specially designed program to shape the quantum computing ecosystem. Become part of a project in which you will research the solving of fluid dynamics equations with quantum algorithms together with experts from other DLR institutes as well as with industrial partners and at the same time become part of the quantum computing ecosystem.

Description of the PhD project:

You will research and develop quantum algorithms for solving fluid transport equations. These equations are examined to see to what extent and with what methods they can be implemented and solved on quantum computers. These approaches are linked to various algorithmic approaches and their implementation on different hardware architectures for quantum computers. You use quantum simulators to evaluate and test the algorithms. In addition, DLR also operates quantum computers on which, if possible, the algorithms you develop are also tested.

Your tasks:

As part of this PhD position, you will have the chance to become part of the quantum computing ecosystem with a focus on aviation. The DLR environment offers you opportunities and access to state-of-the-art simulation software and hardware. Become part of the DLR Quantum Computing Initiative.

Look forward to a fulfilling job with an employer who appreciates your commitment and supports your personal and professional development. Our unique infrastructure offers you a working environment in which you have unparalleled scope to develop your creative ideas and accomplish your professional objectives. Our human resources policy places great value on a healthy family and work-life-balance as well as equal opportunities for persons of all genders (f/m/x). Individuals with disabilities will be given preferential consideration in the event their qualifications are equivalent to those of other candidates.
