Swarm robotics is an emerging technology for extra-terrestrial exploration. A swarm of N robotic agents can compose a mesh network up to O(N2) radio links. These links enable (1) communications, (2) agent self-localization with the line-of-Sight (LoS) propagation, and (3) radio imaging with the multi-paths reflected from the environment, i.e. ground, wall, obstacles, etc.

For radio-imaging, each multi-path defines an ellipsoid E (pi, pj, pR) with the transmitting and receiving agents at positions pi and pj as the two focal points, and an unknown reflection point pR tangential to a reflecting surface defined with an unknown implicit function f(x,y,z) =0. For a mission like lunar lava cave exploration, the reflecting surface is often irregularly curved, but with regularity conditions like being smooth.

Your task is to design a functional optimizer finding the best estimation of the reflecting surface, given all the ellipsoids. You have the opportunity to verify your designed optimizer real-world measurement data we obtained from a lava cave on Lanzarote. 

• excellent knowledge of estimation, tracking, optimization
• strong mathematics/signal-processing background
• excellent programming skills in MATLAB, Python etc.
