Job Description

Electric vehicles (EVs) contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions and offer a fascinating driving experience. This is the result of high performance combined with low energy consumption and is largely enabled by the semiconductor devices used in the electric traction drive. Wide bandgap semiconductors such as gallium nitride (GaN) enable the manufacture of extremely energy-efficient power electronics. For vertical power transistors, shielding interfaces from high electric fields is critical to ensure high breakdown voltages.

• In this thesis, junction terminations for GaN devices shall be investigated experimentally. The focus is on process development in the research clean room at Bosch Renningen. You will conduct literature research on state-of-the-art depletion methods.
• Furthermore, you will transfer and develop new process conditions.
• In addition, your job includes electrical characterization of manufactured devices.
• Last but not least, you will be independent in your evaluation and scientific reporting.

Qualifications

• Education: Master studies in the field of Electrical Engineering, Physics or similar with a focus on semiconductor technology
• Experience and Knowledge: sound knowledge of fundamental physics, solid-state physics and semiconductor device physics; experience in semiconductor modelling and with wide-bandgap or III-V semiconductors is an advantage
• Personality and Working Practice: innovative, open-minded, willing to delve deeply into a complex subject, motivates self and others
• Enthusiasm: for creating new things as part of a team, strong interest in the physical background as well as in semiconductor devices for power applications
• Languages: fluent in English (written and spoken), knowledge of German an advantage
