Job description

The Institute of Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment (ICBM) at the University of Oldenburg is seeking to fill the following position in the "Marine Sensor Systems" working group at the Wilhelmshaven site - as soon as possible until 31.12.2026 :

Research Associate (m/f/d)
(E 13 TV-L, 75 %)

in the project PrimePrevention - Predict marine biohazards for prevention of their socio-economic impacts .

The ICBM is an internationally renowned research institute for basic and applied marine sciences. The institute has more than 20 research groups investigating the function of marine environmental systems as part of interdisciplinary work (chemistry, biology, physics, mathematical modeling).

The PrimePrevention project is part of the mareXtreme mission funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, which aims to improve the predictability of extreme marine events and natural hazards and thus strengthen the resilience of the coastal population and economy in this regard. PrimePrevention, in turn, focuses on developing an intelligent and flexible strategy for monitoring and predicting selected biological hazards (cyanobacteria, Vibrio spp. and hypoxia) in the Baltic Sea.

Cyanobacteria, like various other groups of algae, have specific pigments which in turn influence their optical properties, such as the absorption of light. This allows conclusions to be drawn about their distribution by measuring their optical properties. For this reason, the job holder's task will be to develop a compact, user-friendly and cost-efficient sensor module for the continuous measurement of optical properties, in particular the absorption coefficient of water. Furthermore, the measurements obtained will be used to develop algorithms for the detection of cyanobacteria in sample water in order to investigate their distribution in the Baltic Sea and to provide a basis for decision-making for further sampling.

The position explicitly offers the possibility of a doctorate.
