The successful candidate will be employed under a regular employment contract. The position is to be filled by 6/1/2024 and offered for a fixed term for 3 years. The fixed-term employment is possible as it constitutes one of the fixed-term options of the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz (German Act on Fixed-term Scientific Contracts). This is a full-time position. The successful candidate has the opportunity to pursue a doctoral degree in this position. The salary is based on the German public service salary scale (TV-L).The position corresponds to a pay grade of EG 13 TV-L.

Unser Profil

The Institute for Automation of Complex Power Systems at RWTH coordinates the Inter-oPEn Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action project. Inter-oPEn offers a unique doctoral training program for 10 researchers that integrates multi-sectorial knowledge, gathering electrical engineering and legal researchers. To achieve the common goal of the interoperable PE-dominated power system, openness will be a pivotal factor across the different doctoral projects, tackling fundamental aspects of modern PE-based electrical systems such as control, protection, interoperability, governance, and intellectual property challenges. Comprised of 8 academic partners and 13 industrial associated partners, Inter-oPEn offers a broad industry and transmission system operator expertise for doctoral trainings, research, and secondments. Compared to previous EU projects and doctoral training networks on the interoperable PE-dominated grid, Inter-oPEn is innovative by including two fundamental and new aspects: (1) the interplay of technical and legal perspectives is considered, and (2) openness principles are the heart of engineering and legal research, as well as training. The project will provide training through doctoral research to talented Doctoral Candidates. InterOpen Doctoral Candidates will enroll on PhD degree programmes and be employed for 36 months in a network of universities and industry with expertise in the field of power electronics, HVDC and modern power systems.

Join us and work together with many national and international partners from industry and research to create a climate-friendly and secure future energy system!

Ihr Profil

The ideal candidate comes with the following profile:

Ihre Aufgaben

The candidate hired for the position will perform research on the below doctoral project. During the project two secondments (each 3-6 months) at another university specialized in legal aspects, and an HVDC supplier are envisioned. In addition, the candidate will be responsible for smaller management tasks within the Inter-oPEn project, e.g., for dissemination.

Doctoral Project: Structured Control & Protection Software for HVDC Converters

To address climate change and energy independency, the EU aims for offshore energy generation of 340 Gigawatt by 2050. The most efficient way to transport this energy to shore is by using high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) systems. Their behaviour is predominantly defined by the HVDC converter’s control and protection software. Several software-related instabilities have been observed and could only be solved with detailed studies of the complete software and close collaboration between the involved parties. However, with the planned increase in HVDC systems, an easier approach is required. Ideally, the converter control and protection software could be sectioned into two parts, a lower level responsible for the power electronics / internal converter behaviour, and an upper level responsible for the power system / external converter behaviour. However, there are complex interdependencies of the respective software functions, hardware limitations, surrounding power system configuration, and intellectual property aspects. In this PhD project, we want to put order into the control and protection functions of HVDC converters. Based on an existing clustering tool that can sort control and protection functions into an upper layer and a lower layer software part (responsible for the external and internal converter behavior, respectively), we want to explore the possibilities using structured data – parts of which can be shared to achieve multi-vendor interoperability. Additionally, a new way of dependency analysis between control and protection functions (and their grouping) would be a useful outcome of this doctoral project.
