Job description

Simulation-Assisted State Re-Coding for Power Reduction of Digital Circuits

During your studies, you can contribute to our ongoing research projects. Join us in pushing the limits of what is technically feasible and be part of breaking new ground together. We offer a variety of challenging and practice-oriented topics as internships, bachelor’s or master’s theses or as student assistants (paid HiWi jobs). You will analyse important scientific preliminary questions and support the project teams with development activities.

Place of work:  Ilmenau

Team: Microelectronics

Career level:  Internship, Thesis or HiWi job

Research field: Integrated sensor systems

Time scope: By agreement

Start: As soon as possible

Application deadline: 2024-06-30

Reference number: IMMS_STUD_ME_0323

The power consumption of modern System-on-Chips (SoC) is determined by the switching activity of the internal logic. This can be reduced, for instance, with clock gating methods. In this case, the clock distribution is modified such that the amount of switching is reduced.

Still, the internal state transitions may exhibit an encoding that relies on implementational constraints or readability rather than power reduction. For instance, a binary counter causes a higher power consumption than a grey-code counter where only a single bit flip per counting step is needed.

In this thesis, a method is to be developed that uses simulation data to determine the internal state sequences of a given digital circuits. On this base, an optimized coding scheme that minimizes the number of register toggles per cycle is to be designed. The method should be shown on a given design example from a current design project.
