Opportunity
MacEwan University is seeking an inspiring, strategic, highly collaborative and inclusive leader for a full-time continuing opportunity as Director, Government Relations, with our University Relations department. Reporting to the Vice-President, University Relations, you will lead the development and implementation of effective and proactive government relations, which includes developing tools and strategies, building support and interest among relevant contacts, and reporting on measures and indicators of progress. You will execute a government relations strategy that includes each order of Government, frequent outreach and engagement to align interests of MacEwan University with elected officials, cross-institutional collaboration to understand priorities, and high integration and effective team development and support within University Relations.
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing counsel on all matters related to MacEwan University's relationship with all three levels of government and implementing strategies and tactics to influence government policies and legislative or regulatory changes;
- Monitoring, analyzing, and presenting to leadership on legislative, funding and program changes that may impact operations;
- Coordinating MacEwan University's legislative efforts and responses;
- Working with administration and faculty to proactively identify and prioritize key policy risks and opportunities;
- Overseeing production of targeted materials that advance MacEwan University's reputation and alignment with government audiences;
- Implementing election strategies;
- Cultivating a senior network of contacts across Canada within government and across the post-secondary sector; and
- Participating in groups focused on federal and provincial legislative, funding, policy, and program activity.
SKILLS
You will have:
- Policy development skills, to respond and advocate on key priorities in a dynamic environment;
- Understanding of political processes, to anticipate changes in regulatory and policy environments;
- In-depth knowledge of compliance and reporting requirements for both MacEwan University and all levels of government;
- The ability to manage and create high performing teams;
- The ability to manage fiscal resources, including the development and evaluation of business plans, budgets, and reporting;
- The ability to direct and manage numerous projects simultaneously and assess relative priorities both short and long term;
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, to be diplomatic, persuasive and a strong facilitator;
- The ability to prioritize and execute on strategies to mitigate issues; and
- The ability to develop and maintain strategic relationships with stakeholders.
QUALIFICATIONS
- A minimum of a master’s degree in business, public policy, or a related field.
- A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in government affairs with a policy or legislative background, and a proven track record of advising and working with senior decision makers.
- A minimum of 5 years progressive management experience.
- Senior management experience would be an asset.
- Experience within a post-secondary environment and/or public-sector organizations at a decision-making level would be an asset.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
