JOB SUMMARY
The Traffic Management Unit oversees total project delivery for municipal works, including preparation of preliminary, functional and detailed designs for intersection modifications to municipal roads to reduce delays and congestion or to enable traffic control signals to operate effectively and efficiently, as well as the preparation of related tendering, contract drawings and documents, management and/or coordination of construction activities, and the preparation of as-built drawings.
You are responsible for installing, programming, maintaining and repairing Automatic Traffic Recorder (ATR), Variable Message Signs (VMS), Speed Display Signs (SDS), and associated equipment; and assisting in the collection of data relating to traffic operational matters.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of Grade 12
Minimum of 3 years of work experience in a related field
CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES
Valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated
KNOWLEDGE
- Working knowledge of city and legislated safety requirements specific to the safety issues related to the position
- Working knowledge of electro-mechanical and/or electronic equipment
- Working knowledge of computer programs such as Excel and Word
- Working knowledge of data collection methods
- Knowledge of the Ontario Traffic Manual Book 7
- An understanding of the hazards or working within the Right-of-Way
- Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers.
COMPETENCIES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Maintain and validate data produced by ATR devices and TDC-8 (Traffic Count Boards)
- Ability to plan and layout equipment on the roadway
- Ability to research data and present findings
- Repair and maintain ATR, TDC-8 (Jamar), VMS, portable camera and SDS devices
- Ability to pull trailers and to place them in tight spots
- Ability to follow all safety regulations
- Maintain vehicles and trailers in good working order and prepare equipment maintenance plans as required
- Ability to use computers, windows operating system, word, excel, and programs that download data to equipment
- Ability to use computers and associated programs to enable cost recovery from various clients
- Ability to communicate effectively with clients and co-workers, including contractors, project managers and other department staff
- Ability to make sound judgements regarding the placement of equipment on the roadway
- Ability to install and maintain data and messaging equipment in the field using bucket truck equipment
- Requires accuracy, motor skills and coordination
- Requires effective communication skills, both written and verbal
- Work in team environment
- Work individually and follow instructions with minimum supervision
- Physical ability to lift, install, manoeuvre equipment in varying environments
- Available to work outside the normal working hours including nights, weekends and statutory holidays
- Work overtime, as required

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Language Requirement: English oral, reading, writing
- Driver’s License Requirement: A valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated
- You may initially be paid 95% of your starting rate of pay, in accordance with the collective agreement.
- Experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic requirements.
