POSITION OVERVIEW

The City of Maple Ridge has an exciting opportunity for an Equipment Operator 4 (a). The successful candidate will operate, maintain and serve a variety of heavy mobile construction and maintenance equipment, such as hydraulic backhoes and rubber-tired industrial or farm-type tractors, following competency standards, safety practices, and regulations.

Incumbents of this class operate with considerable independent judgement in adapting standard operating techniques to work. This position requires working cohesively with the Managers, who will provide verbal and written assignments to evaluate work performance regarding safe and efficient equipment operation and the adequacy of the service supplied to the work site.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of Grade 12 and considerable related experience in the operation and servicing of heavy construction and maintenance equipment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Thorough knowledge of the methods and practices employed in the operation of construction equipment.
• Thorough knowledge of rules and regulations governing the safe operation of equipment and of precautions necessary to avoid accidents.
• Sound knowledge of the principles, practices, materials and supplies used in the provision of underground and other municipal services.
• Sound knowledge of the methods, practices and tools used in the servicing and maintenance of equipment operated.
• Working knowledge of the operation of diesel and gasoline motors, where operated.
• Ability to operate equipment in a safe and effective manner.
• Ability to plan work in order to operate the equipment efficiently and effectively.
• Ability to understand oral and written instructions and work from drawings, plans, worksheets and cutsheets.
• Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports related to the work.
• Ability to perform manual work involving considerable physical endurance.
• Ability to supervise one or more subordinates performing unskilled and semi-skilled construction and maintenance tasks.
• Skill in the operation of heavy mobile construction and maintenance equipment and in the use of tools for servicing, maintenance and minor repair of same.
• Skill in manual dexterity and demonstrated mechanical aptitude.

LICENCES AND CERTIFICATES

Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia – Class 3 with Air Brake Endorsement.

HOURS OF WORK

Positions based on an eight (8) hour day/forty (40) hour week which shall work any eight (8) consecutive hours.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• May perform minor supervisory duties incidental to production duties and assist one or more subordinates performing various duties related to equipment operation.
• EOCP Water Distribution - Level 1 (In good standing).
• Preferred experience in civil construction, utility installation and road building.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

• The position will require the individual to perform various skilled and semi-skilled manual tasks.
• May be required to operate various equipment and tools and drive a light truck from Operations Centre to or between job sites.
