At the Department of Public Works we manage 23,000 kilometers of roads and highways and 4100 bridges across Nova Scotia. Our Traffic Control Operations group plays critical role in maintaining, installing, and repairing highway lighting devices throughout the province.

About Our Opportunity

 

As the Electrical/Electronics Technician Student, you will gain practical experience, and receive training and mentorship from highly qualified government professionals. This is the perfect opportunity to jump start your career and assist the Department in maintaining electrical services for traffic control and highway lighting devices.

 

You will assist the Traffic Control group in a wide range of duties and have opportunity to be involved in a variety of projects including:

 

We offer opportunities to participate in training courses for Standard First Aid, Traffic Control Person, along with other safety courses. We will provide you with all the required technical and protective equipment you need.

 

There may be opportunity for overtime, and mileage and meals will be provided where work site distance from the assigned base supports the claim.

Qualifications and Experience

 

You are a student currently enrolled in an Electrical/ Electronic Engineering Technology or Electrical Technician program and returning to school in the fall (or in the next applicable semester for the education program).

 

Travel throughout your assigned area is required, as such, you must have a valid driver license.

 

As the ideal candidate you demonstrate a keen interest in working in an electrical/electronic environment and are eager to learn how to assemble traffic light components and trouble shoot electrical issues. You must also be:

 

Previous electrical/ electronic work experience, as well as database management are assets to be considered.

 

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions

 

About half of your work is outdoors in various weather conditions, with considerable travel throughout your assigned area.

Additional Information

 

This opportunity will start approximately May 1, 2024 with an end date of August 30, 2024.

 

This position is based in the Traffic Control Office located in Miller Lake, but may require field work throughout the province.

 

This position requires you to have adequate vision and colour perception to operate safely, in the shop and in the field.

 

Pay Grade: HOURLY 

Salary Range: $17.34 - $28.26 Hourly
