Job description

Nature of the Work

The position of psychologist encompasses, in particular, responsibility for prevention and screening activities, providing assistance and guidance to students experiencing or likely to experience social maladjustments or learning difficulties, evaluating the psychological and mental functioning and determining an individualized education plan in order to foster psychological health and restore mental health of students in interaction with their environment and support them in their educational path and in their personal and social development. 

Tasks and responsibilities

He or she assesses students via classroom observation, interviews, testing, portfolio assessment, etc., conducts psychoeducational evaluations of students who are being considered for special education services and/or for whom a specific intervention/behaviour program may be advisable and  analyzes results of such evaluations with a view to formulate appropriate recommendations.

He or she provides individual and group counselling, where possible, to students who present problems of a social and/or emotional nature, as well as provide crisis intervention, where possible, to pupils who are experiencing a crisis in their lives and require such supportive intervention.

He or she follows-up where possible, on referred student’s progress via classroom observations, interviews, evaluations, and consultations with other individuals (e.g. teachers and parents).

He or she provides input, where applicable, with respect to the formulation of objectives, strategies etc. as part of the Individualized Education Plan process, recommends intervention techniques within the school milieu (e.g. classroom management, remedial programs, etc.), meets with parents for the purpose of discussing their child and enlist their cooperation and input in the educational process, as well as assists in promoting the integration of special needs students within the regular classroom where feasible.

He or she communicates with other school boards, hospitals, clinics, CIUSS, etc. for the purpose of sharing information regarding certain students as well as investigates external resources and provides information to in-school personnel, parents and other professionals.
