Marine Biomass Innovation Research Project
(Contractual Position to March 18, 2026)
DUTIES
The Community Liaisons (ICL) will be based in their home community spread across one of the three regions of western Ktaqmkuk (Newfoundland): the Great Northern Peninsula, Bay St. George, and the Bay of Islands. The ICL for Bay of Islands must therefore demonstrate a meaningful connection to the communities within the region, with a mutual understanding and respect for communities in the other two regions. The successful applicant will act on behalf of their community's interests and priorities in support of the Marine Biomass Innovation research project. Duties include supporting and facilitating community discussions and engagement on regional marine assets and related business/entrepreneurial opportunities; fostering respectful relationships between Memorial University and communities in the region; supporting the development and facilitation of necessary research (or other) agreements; supporting the development and implementation of a governance structure for the project; ensuring knowledge generated is diffused with community impact throughout the project; supporting capacity building for all partners including industry partners, investigators, partner communities, and students; and writing plain language summaries of project goals, objectives, and knowledge outputs. ICLs will ensure compliance with policies and procedures relevant to the university or funding agency with community priorities in focus; learn and mentor toward the Two-Eyed Seeing guiding principle and other collaborative, interdisciplinary, and cross-cultural approaches to community-based research; provide support for community-based activities and initiatives; support researchers in developing and applying innovative techniques for engagement of Indigenous, community, and industry partners; conduct regular check-ins with community partners and researchers on specific project milestones, deliverables, and accountability measures to ensure equitable and cohesive engagement throughout; and perform other related duties as required. Regional ICLs will join various committees ex-officio and as an active member as part of the project's governance structure. The position will be based in the Bay of Islands region but require some travel within the region, as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
Demonstrated experience (1-3 years) in Indigenous and/or community engagement; completion of post-secondary education in project administration, management, or a relevant field; or any equivalent combination of experience and training. Demonstrated community connections and relations with Mi'kmaw groups in the Bay of Islands region are required. The ideal candidate will have a proactive approach with strong team building skills and leadership capacity, along with excellent written and verbal communication and organizational skills. Excellent computer skills and the ability to function effectively and under pressure in diverse university and community settings is essential. Critical thinking skills, the ability to effectively manage competing priorities in a high volume, deadline driven environment; experience within a university research environment; and experience in integrating Western and Indigenous research ideologies and methodologies would be considered assets.
SALARY $58,726 - $68,895 per annum (Non-Bargaining)
