Head Custodian – Emmanuel Baptist Church DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES The basic function of the Custodian team is to maintain the church interior, walkways, furniture and equipment in a clean and tidy condition. Custodians also maintain building security and provide assistance to those using church facilities when required. Each custodian will be responsible to conduct the duties listed on the daily schedule (checklist). 1. Lock and unlock premises (doors and windows) and corner parking lot as required. 2. Cleaning and maintaining the various rooms of the church. 3. Replacing washroom supply and light bulbs. 4. Provide assistance in arranging furniture and equipment in all rooms prior to scheduled functions, and (as required) for unscheduled functions. 5. Communicate as necessary with groups using the church building, especially during evening hours when church office staff are not available to interact with groups, to ensure security is maintained when church is vacated. The Head custodian will be responsible for the following over and above the daily schedules. 1. Adjust thermostats, ventilation and lighting as dictated by climate and anticipated use of premises. 2. Purchase necessary supplies, subject to approval by the Property Coordinator. 3. Carry out repairs and maintenance except for major items which are to be reported to the Property Coordinator. 4. Serve as an emergency contact in case of property related emergencies such as fire alarm. 5. Supervise and lead Assistant Custodian staff: a) Schedule shifts. b) Train staff for cleaning and setting up as outlined in daily schedule. c) Arrange for set up of Baptismal tank as required. d) Schedule for special projects, e.g., carpet cleaning, stripping wax from floors. e) Encourage and compliment staff for work well done and provide constructive coaching as required when improvement in performance is needed. f) Encourage staff to do other jobs not on the daily schedule when they see the need. g) Evaluate staff annually in accordance with relevant staff review policies and in consultation with the Property Coordinator h) Recommend staffing adjustments to Property Coordinator Conditions of Employment include: The custodian’s regular cleaning shifts are from 6pm to 10pm Monday through Saturday and some work is required on Sundays. The head custodian will work up to 20 hours a week depending on how many regular cleaning shifts are done. The head custodian could work from 1 to 3 regular cleaning shifts with additional time reserved for other duties. The Head Custodian is responsible for scheduling the other custodians to ensure the required work is done within the allocated total hours. Qualifications: Able to conduct general maintenance work as well as cleaning.
