The Yukon Conservation Society (YCS) is a grassroots environmental non-profit organization established in 1968. Since then, we have gained a respected position of influence on environmental policy and education in the North by working with communities, First Nation governments, and diverse organizations to achieve many conservation victories in the territory. Our Board, staff, and volunteers are experts in their fields. We are committed to pursuing ecosystem well-being throughout the Yukon and beyond, recognizing that human well-being ultimately depends upon fully functioning, healthy ecosystems.
About YCS and Mining
YCS is not against mining. We envision that mining in the Yukon occurs only in places where such activities are ecologically and culturally acceptable. Where mining occurs, it will be based on the need for metal, on sound economics, and it will be done in a way that ensures that perpetual treatment is not necessary.
YCS researches, educates and advocates on mining activities so that the industry is more ecologically and culturally acceptable. YCS regularly pushes for better and stronger mining legislation and regulation; participates in environmental assessments and licensing processes (of both exploration and mine projects) to ensure the highest possible environmental standards are applied; monitors abandoned mine cleanups to ensure they get done; acts as a watchdog for current and ongoing mining operations to make sure they meet their licensing and regulatory obligations; and educates the general public and other parties (i.e. schools, academics, journalists) on key mining issues.
About the Job
Yukon Conservation Society seeks a passionate and dedicated Mining Coordinator to join our team. The position will report to the Executive Director and receive technical advice and guidance from the volunteer YCS Mining Committee.
