JOB OVERVIEW

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of  Surveyor / Civil Engineering Technician.

Reporting to the First Line Manager, this position is responsible to work in accordance with prescribed safety procedures and regulations, to maintain, verify and update OPG’s network of benchmarks and survey control points. In this role you will have the unique ability to maintain current operational and theoretical expertise in applicable systems, software, and techniques within the industry.

Additional responsibilities include inspecting, diagnosing, testing, troubleshooting, maintaining, and calibrating all areas of OPG’s Surveying instruments and equipment. The selected candidate will monitor, organize and manage survey operations, including topographic and bathymetric surveys, as well as, assist in various hydraulic field studies. The individual will maintain documents applicable to the work, carry out contract coordination, and prepare quality control procedures. Additional responsibilities may include inspecting and maintaining a variety of dam safety monitoring instrumentation

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES 

• Maintain, verify, and update OPG’s network of benchmarks and survey control points.
• Monitor, organize, and manage survey operations
• Develop survey plans, methods, and procedures for conducting surveys 
• Ensure instruments and equipment are maintained and calibrated
• Complete topographic surveys and layouts using modern survey equipment and methods
• Conduct topographic surveys for deformation monitoring of hydroelectric facilities including dams and powerhouse
• Coordinate findings of the work with engineering personnel and others concerned with the project
• Analyze, manage, and display data using geographic information systems (GIS) and computer-aided design and drafting (CAD)
• Maintain accurate survey records, documentation, and submittals; record all measurements and other information obtained during survey activities
• Conduct / assist with bathymetric surveys, water level measurement, and river flow/velocity measurements
• Conduct / assist with maintenance of various dam safety monitoring instruments and communication system

EDUCATION

• Completed High School Diploma or equivalent, plus post secondary education in a related field of study.*

* Relevant Field of Education includes Surveying, Geomatics or Civil Engineering.

QUALIFICATIONS

• 5 years of related experience is preffered.
• Knowledge of engineering design and various methods of surveying methods. 
• Familiar with, and proficiency in, the operation of survey equipment such as Level, Transit, Total Station, and various Global Positioning System (GPS) methods.
• Familiar with computer tools and software for post processing of survey data from data collectors
• Strong technical, documentation, and organizational skills
• Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
• Able to travel 75% - this position requires travel for extended periods to remote sites including multiweek trips to Northern Ontario sites. Travel by air and on-water work will be required. Daily trips into remote locations, with limited facilities is required.
• Valid Ontario driver’s license (Class G) in good standing. 
• Registered as an Ontario Land Surveyor (OLS) with AOLS is an asset.
