The Royal BC Museum (RBCM) was established in 1886, making it one of the oldest continually operating museums in Canada. Since its inception the museum has changed and evolved alongside the rest of the province. Today’s RBCM is committed to creating community connections, gathering spaces and educational programs, and to providing opportunities for critical thinking, self-reflection, and thought-provoking experiences to people across BC and around the world.

The archives were founded in 1894 and in 2003, both organizations joined together to become BC’s combined provincial museum and archives, with its purpose being to broaden the understanding about our province. We are passionate about inspiring curiosity and wonder, while sharing BC’s story with millions of visitors who walk through our doors and explore our website each year.

IMAX Victoria is also part of the RBCM and provides incredible immersive cinematic experiences and work in tandem to deliver inspiring educational and entertaining experiences.

The RBCM, is updating not only the facilities and infrastructure, it is creating a new Collections and Research Building in Colwood, BC. It is an exciting time to join the museum team as we rethink and reimagine our methods and processes, and welcome the perspectives and stories of all British Columbians.

Learning and outreach programs can enrich and change people’s lives in so many ways. As advocates of life-long learning, we strive to connect and ignite a community of informed, empowered and compassionate British Columbians - providing meaning and relevance through a variety of inquiry-based programming. The department is responsible for Community Engagement and for reviewing and operationalizing the Royal BC Museum’s Community Engagement Strategy in collaboration with departments from across the organization, and in partnership with government.

The Royal BC Museum seeks a highly collaborative and seasoned Director of Learning & Engagement to lead all programmatic activity—both inside and outside the museum's walls—to engage diverse audiences, increase public involvement, and expand the museum's role in and relevance to our communities. The Director of Learning and Engagement leads through service to diverse communities, learners of all ages, and a network of artists, creatives, and educators.

The Director of Learning and Engagement is a member of the museum’s leadership team reporting to the Vice President, Engagement and UNDRIP Implementation. Director is responsible for developing and implementing a compelling new vision for the department in alignment with RBCM’s mission and values, our diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility goals and our provincial mandate. The Director is responsible for strategic oversight and management of all aspects of the Learning and Engagement Department, including educational programs, internal and external engagement, and community programming. The Director ensures programs provide learning and cultural value and also contribute to the Museum’s revenue streams.

The Director of Learning and Engagement works within relative, educational, cultural and community-driven realms to strengthen community ties to the museum, and build mutually beneficial relationships that significantly expand access to the Royal BC Museum.

We are currently looking for a Director of Learning and Engagement who holds a Master’s degree with an emphasis on education, community development, museum studies or relevant discipline. The ideal candidate will have a minimum 5 years’ experience providing leadership within a research institution, cultural organization or relevant commercial entity. They will have administrative, leadership, organizational and teamwork skills and experience developing culturally diverse programs that are relevant to today's audiences. They will have experience in building excellent cross functional relationships and will have a commitment to inclusion and diversity.

The ideal candidate will be a team leader with vision, creativity and business acumen. They must have knowledge of research management, an understanding of multicultural programming, knowledge of project management practices, a strong ability to forge relationships with employees, government shareholders, public and partners, and the capacity to encourage interaction between visitors.
