As the apprentice, you are just one of the key players who support the overall safety and efficiency of our infrastructure.

About Our Opportunity

As the sprinkler system installer apprentice, you will assist the Mechanical trades coordinator or the mechanical foreperson, under the supervision of a qualified Red Seal journeyperson in inspecting, maintaining, repairing, renovating and/or installing fire suppression system components and systems in provincially owned buildings.

Primary Accountabilities

Under the general supervision of the Mechanical trades coordinator, the sprinkler system installer apprentice will install, maintain, service, repair, inspect and decommission industrial, commercial and residential fire suppression systems, equipment and components in provincially owned and leased buildings serviced by the Department. The sprinkler system installer apprentice is responsible for connecting to and servicing mechanical fire suppression systems, equipment, piping, and associated controls.

This may include, but is not limited to, performing regular preventive maintenance procedures, responding to corrective maintenance tasks, project work and emergency calls the sprinkler system installer is responsible for ensuring that all work is completed in compliance with the National Building Code of Canada, National Energy Code, National Fire Code of Canada, and departmental requirements and standards.

Qualifications and Experience

You are a minimum Level 2 apprentice, currently enrolled in the sprinkler system installer trades programme, recognized by the Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency.

A valid Nova Scotia driver’s license is required.

Safety training in the following areas will be considered an asset: Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Act, Safety Orientation, First Aid Certification and CPR, WHMIS, Scaffolding Safety, Fall Protection (Basic and Scaffolding Practical), Confined Space Awareness, Elevating Work-Platforms.

You can analyze information, identify relationships, and have ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing. The ability to efficiently and effectively obtain information and to exercise sound judgment, collaborate in a team environment; and demonstrate an understanding of cultural differences is essential. You must have good public relations skills and have ability to respond with tact and diplomacy when working with various government clients, contractors, public, and staff.


We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions

Most of your work is completed indoors, but also occasionally outside where normal hazards of a construction site are present. Your safety is important to us, and we count on you to follow all safe work practices when handling machinery, tools, and materials. Some of your duties will require you to climb, work at heights, or within confined spaces.

Pay Grade: TRA 14

Salary Range: $19.10 - $30.25 Hourly
