Position Summary: Reporting to the Duty Commander, each Primary Care Paramedic is responsible for responding to requests for paramedic service and delivering medical care to victims of accident/illness, ensuring safe transportation to receiving medical facilities, and assisting with the ongoing care of the patient within the facility as may be required. Also, participates in the ongoing maintenance of ambulance vehicles, equipment and stations, and other duties as may be required by the Duty Commander or Perth County Paramedic Services
Primary Responsibilities: 1. Patient Assessment
- Assesses scene for hazards
- Determines patient condition through physical assessment
- Establishes priority of treatment in multiple patient situations
- Monitors and observes patient condition at all times
2. Treatment of Patients
- Performs Basic Life Support (BLS) patient care functions in accordance with qualifications and BLS Standards ensuring patient’s safety, privacy and confidentiality
- Performs any and all approved delegated medical acts and treatments under the PCP scope of practice approved by PCEMS
- Transfer patient to ambulance
- Continues and sustains patient care while enroute to destination
- Copes with unusual situations and employs light rescue techniques when required
3. Transfer of Patients
- Upon arrival at a medical facility, nursing home and/or other destination, transfers patient(s) and effects to/from vehicle to/from facility
- Obtains patient history and case information
- Ensures responsibility for patient is transferred to/from facility staff
4. Vehicle Maintenance and Driving
- Inspects Perth County EMS vehicle(s), including spares, for road-worthiness, BLS inventory (according to the schedule of supplies and equipment), cleanliness, and serviceability
- Participates in PCEMS safe driving training program and any remedial that may be required
- Completes vehicle check sheet
- Accounts for purchase of gas and oil using methods adopted by Perth County EMS
- Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls as per the rules and regulations within the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario, The Ambulance Act of Ontario along with all related regulations and standards, the Ontario Coroners Act, Ontario Personal Health and Protection Act, along with Perth County EMS Policy and Procedures
- Utilizes emergency warning devices as per the procedures established by regulatory officials, and Perth County EMS
5. Education
Students:
- Provides education for Paramedic student field placements and other applicable observers
Staff Development:
- Participates in staff in-service training programs and practice sessions and any other staff education if possible
- Participates in orientation of less experienced staff
- Maintains Base Hospital certification as determined by the Base Hospital
6. Documentation
- Completes an electronic Ambulance Call Report (as per ACR Completion Manual) in full
- Provides electronic and written incident reports, accident/injury reports and any other report to Duty Supervisor for review and comment
- Completes electronic vehicle and inventory checks and request
7. Occupational Health and Safety
- Employees are responsible for performing duties in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and County of Perth policies and procedures. Employees are to wear any personal protective equipment required to ensure personal safety and report any known hazards and/or incidents in the workplace to their Supervisor, or the Manager of Human Resources. Employees must ensure they do not operate equipment without instruction and are aware of the hazards associated with their job and take all precautions recommended.
- Ensures ambulances and station premises are safe and clean
- Is familiar with and works in accordance with occupational health and safety legislation and the Perth County Health and Safety Policy and Procedures Manual
8. Team Function
- Communicates effectively with and works with other team members (i.e. Vehicle service staff, police, fire, other allied health-care professionals, dispatch and county staff) to provide continuity of care
9. Other Related Responsibilities
- Computer and keyboarding skills with familiarity with our common business software (ie. Microsoft office suite, SharePoint, Moodle, I-medic)
- Performs station housekeeping duties, refurbishes units, general maintenance of equipment, and general maintenance of grounds and buildings
- Performs any other duties as deemed necessary by the Perth County Paramedic Services Leadership Team
Qualifications: - The ideal candidate must be a certified Primary Care Paramedic or Primary Care Paramedic Student writing the provincial certification in 2024. You must meet all employment and qualification criteria as contained in Ontario Regulation 257/00 – Part III. Additionally, you are able to perform the functional requirements of the job including performance in high-stress and inherently unpredictable situations. You will also be able to perform, bending, crouching, lifting, and walking on uneven ground on a regular basis. Personal Transportation is required as well as proof of a valid Class F driver’s license.
Shift: Ability to work all shift rotations at all stations within Perth County including weekends and statutory holidays. Platoon and locations are variable and subject to change
Salary Range: $40.82/hour
