Job Title : Optimization Engineer, Top Drive SME
Reporting to : Strategic PPM
A Top Drive Subject Matter Expert is a highly specialized role responsible for providing technical expertise and support related to top drive systems used in the oil and gas drilling industry. They possess in-depth knowledge of top drive technology, operations, and maintenance, and are responsible for ensuring the efficient and safe functioning of top drive systems.
Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Providing technical expertise and guidance on the design, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of top drive systems.
- Conducting detailed analysis and assessment of top drive system performance, identifying areas for improvement and optimization.
- Collaborating with engineering teams to develop and implement design modifications or upgrades to enhance top drive system performance and reliability.
- Developing and implementing preventive maintenance programs for top drive systems, ensuring that maintenance activities are carried out in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and industry standards.
- Providing technical support and guidance to field personnel during the installation, operation, and maintenance of top drive systems.
- Conducting training programs and workshops for drilling personnel to enhance their knowledge and skills in top drive operations and maintenance.
- Keeping abreast of industry trends, new technologies, and best practices related to top drive systems, and making recommendations for their implementation.
- Conducting failure analysis and root cause investigations on failed top drive components, providing recommendations for corrective actions and improvements.
- Collaborating with vendors and suppliers to ensure the availability of spare parts, technical documentation, and support for top drive systems.
- Ensuring compliance with safety regulations and standards in all top drive system-related activities
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential for effectively collaborating with cross-functional teams and providing technical guidance to field personnel. They should stay updated with the latest advancements in top drive technology and possess a strong commitment to safety and compliance
- Degree in mechanical or electrical engineering, along with relevant industry certifications.
- Experience 10 years or more in mechanical or electrical engineering.
- Business Ethics – Understands fully Ensign’s ethics policy and its application in all business dealings including contractual agreements and contract negotiations
- Business Policies - Understands and agrees to follow all of Ensign’s Policy and Directives and procedures as set forth in the Ensign Company Policy and Basic Directives Handbook for Employees
- Certifications – Maintains technical and safety certifications required by company or government agencies

- Uses the correct protective clothing and equipment as provided by Ensign and guards against misuse or damage to such equipment
- Reports any hazardous situations arising in the workplace that cannot be self-corrected, or injury incurred during the course of work, no matter how minor. Avoids injury resulting from manual handling tasks, by use of risk assessment, correct mechanical handling equipment and correct manual handling techniques
