Reporting to the Manager, Medicine Hat Support Services and working in collaboration with the Calgary nursing counterpart and Clinical Lead, the Registered Nurse (RN) will be responsible for coordinating and delivering comprehensive STBBI (sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections) education, testing, and treatment services. The RN will work closely with mainstream health providers, community partners, and agency staff to identify high risk groups and opportunities for intervention and support. The RN will also support the Well Program, delivering comprehensive and individualized pre-conception and perinatal care to people of reproductive age and ability who use drugs, experience homelessness, and/or are otherwise marginalized. The RN will act as a member of the Medicine Hat Support Services team and will work to engage participants in wrap-around supports, minimizing barriers to care.

This position is a 0.7-1.0FTE (25-35 hours per week) based out of the SafeLink Alberta operational site in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Services will be provided across our provincial catchment area, including Calgary, Medicine Hat, and rural areas across the Calgary and South Health Zones. Travel and event-based evening and weekend work required.

Key Responsibilities:

 Work in collaboration with the SafeLink Alberta Clinical Lead and Medical Director to provide STBBI testing and treatment services to members of key populations.

 Maintain a special focus on the identification and reduction of syphilis across southern

Alberta.

 Facilitate comprehensive physical assessments to people of reproductive age and ability who are experiencing pregnancy or barriers to accessing reproductive health services and other health and social services.

 Ensure provision of ongoing testing opportunities throughout pregnancy, particularly for syphilis.

 Work in collaboration with the Support Services and Education teams, as well as with

Nursing counterparts across the organization, to coordinate testing events.

 Provide system navigation for program participants and work to minimize barriers to care by building partnerships and coordinating a network of services.

 Ensure ongoing support to clients through the development of mutually agreed upon contact plans, maintaining regular appointments and telephone calls.

 Provide access to and facilitate integrated referral pathways with other SafeLink Alberta and community services related to identified needs.

 Provide evidence-based health education on topics such as sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections, perinatal, reproductive, and sexual health, newborn health, and general physical and mental health. Focus on increasing public awareness and uptake for testing related to syphilis and congenital syphilis.

 Advocate and facilitate access to all pregnancy outcomes options (parenting, termination, adoption).

 Engage in prevention discussions and activities, including individual education and the

distribution of harm reduction supplies (safer sex and substance use equipment) based on participant need.

 Develop and maintain inter-agency collaborative relationships with community

partners.

 With the support of the Clinical Lead, maintain clinical records and meet reporting,

confidentiality, and communication requirements of the SafeLink Alberta Medical

Director.

 Maintain program statistics and documentation and participate in ongoing program

evaluation and reporting.

 Ensure project accountability through the maintenance of outcome-based reporting.

Qualifications/Key Competencies:

 Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. Current registration with a relevant professional body

(CARNA/CAPNA).

 Minimum of two years of direct work experience in a front-line or client-focused support setting. An equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered.

 Current Standard First Aid & CPR or BLS certification required. Phlebotomy certification is an asset.

 Proven proficiency in client support, informal counseling, and case management.

 A strengths-based, risk-reduction and human-rights philosophy of service provision is required.

 Demonstrated cultural awareness and responsiveness in working across diverse

populations, including experience in working with people who use drugs.

 Strong knowledge of sexual, reproductive, and perinatal health, mental health, and

substance use is an asset.

 Foundational knowledge of Syphilis, HIV, HCV, and other STBBI prevention, testing, and

treatment.

 Foundational knowledge of mental health and addictions-related issues and interventions.

 Foundational knowledge of, and theoretical orientation to, intersectionality, traumainformed, and anti-oppressive practice frameworks.

 Thorough knowledge of local social service programs and community resources an asset.

 High ethical standards and professionalism, with a demonstrated ability to adhere to strict confidentiality practices.

 Basic computer skills, including the use of Microsoft Office required.

 Public speaking and presentation experience are an asset.

 Non-Violent Crisis Intervention/MANDT, Suicide Intervention (ASIST) is an asset.

 Provision of a criminal record check with vulnerable sector search is required. A positive criminal record check will not necessarily preclude a candidate from being hired - decisions will be made on an individual basis and all information will be kept confidential.

 Access to reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license (non-GDL) is required.

 Provision of a Driver’s abstract and proof of $2 million liability insurance is required.

 The ability to carry a backpack (up to 25 lbs) and travel on foot year-round is required.

Compensation:

The wage range for this position is $37 - $45 per hour.
