Position Summary Reporting to the Dean, Faculty of Arts, Science & Management, the Lab Technician is responsible for technical support and ensuring all technical requirements related to supporting students, faculty and the operation of the departments are met. Duties & Responsibilities TECHNICAL SUPPORT : MAC LABS - Work with the IT Service Delivery team to maintain efficient operations of the Mac Labs and Print Shop.
- Assist IT with the Mac Labs replacement and cascade of MacOS computers.
STUDENT & FACULTY CURRICULAR SUPPORT - In consultation with instructional faculty, deliver technical demonstrations for digital technologies.
- Provide general technical support and advice to students and faculty for software and hardware in the department computer labs and equipment loan inventory.
- Support student registration in external web hosting.
- Support student registration in specialized software.
- Provide advice and information in troubleshooting domain specific software.
- Support the technical requirements of Fine Arts and Digital Design and Development department events.
- Develop and update student platform procedures and the best practices for equipment usage and digital tool and platform integration.
- Provide technical support to faculty in developing videos for technical demonstrations, including video capture, editing and uploading material to various platforms.
- Provide support to faculty in all technical aspects of digital media, including lighting, sound recording, camera work, video editing, and computer programs.
- Provide technical support for students and faculty for specialized internet platforms specific to the department.
- Implement setup and maintenance and provide technical support for studio and Mac Lab online station booking system.
DEPARTMENT OPERATIONS - Administration and maintenance of department equipment inventory database including ongoing data entry for new department equipment and decommissioning (in consultation with the Dean’s Office) of non-functioning equipment.
- Manage the Equipment Loan program.
- Maintenance of department non-systems equipment, including items in the equipment loan inventory, instructional cart systems, photo/video studio equipment, and darkroom equipment.
- Maintenance of photo/video studio.
- Maintains accurate inventory and ensures sufficient supplies of consumables are available to meet instructional and operational requirements.
- Provide technical support in print production services.
- In consultation with the Department Chair, researches new equipment, products and materials for department programs.
- Liaise with Studio Technician-Fine Arts: Sculpture, Ceramics, Painting, Drawing and Printmaking, as a member of the Fine Arts Department technical team to ensure synergy in the delivery of studio needs.
- Responsible for the security of all photo/video studio and Mac Lab equipment in consultation with IT.
- Liaises with the Manager, Facilities Operations department, as required, regarding student first aid, equipment security, student security, space use, and storage of equipment and furniture.
- Accountable for maintaining a safe and clean environment in the studio and labs by adhering to WHMIS, WCB Regulations, and Colleges’ occupational health and safety policies and procedures. Completion of required MSDS forms and effective monitoring of a disposal program for all hazardous materials in use.
- Participates in department meetings as required by the Department Chair and prepares and presents information as requested.
- Performs other related duties as requested by the supervisor.
Required Education & Experience - Post-secondary diploma in Computer Science, web development or related field of study is required;
- A minimum of three (3) years recent and direct experience in a comparable technical position in a post-secondary institution, or discipline-related work environment.
- Demonstrated practical experience must include Mac and Windows operating systems
Required Knowledge Skills & Abilities - Demonstrated organizational, prioritization and time management skills
- Ability to troubleshoot cross-platform issues.
- Familiarity with UI and UX concepts.
- Familiarity with web-based services such as Amazon AWS, WordPress and OpenETC
- Database administration or development experience.
- Extensive working knowledge of MacOS.
- Familiar with lens-based media, including video production.
- Knowledgeable with various computer systems, hardware, software and related computer equipment.
- Experience with inventory control software, managing budgets and inventory.
- Strong communication skills and ability to converse with and support those students, faculty, and employees who need to be more technologically proficient.
- Ability to demonstrate and direct faculty, students and staff in the safe and effective use of equipment in the department computer labs and equipment loan inventory.
- Capable of working independently and responding to issues positively, application of problem-solving skills.
- Effectual team member in the execution of duties and responsibilities, knowledge of policies and procedures, and dealing with equipment faults.
- Effective interpersonal and teamwork skills, supported by demonstrated oral and written communication skills, critical thinking, presentation and training skills.
- Capacity to perform physically demanding work in a safe manner, ability to lift and carry 22 kg, and WHIMS certification is required.
