Your opportunity:

The Academic Advisor is a critical member of the team in the Registrar’s Office and delivers advising sessions for students. The Academic Advisor promotes a welcoming environment in the College for students from diverse backgrounds and serves as an integral part of the advising team.

As a member of the New College Registrar’s Office, the Academic Advisor will be committed to an equity that recognizes, supports, and responds to the diverse histories, lived and marginalized experiences of students and many communities.

Your responsibilities will include:

Advising students on the development of their educational plans

Advising students on program and/or course requirements by probing and providing a range of options and possible consequences

Advising on the appropriateness, precedents and process for petitions and appeals, and suggesting alternative course of action as necessary

Facilitating educational workshops and seminars

Developing learning outcomes for workshops and/or services

Developing content for instructional workshops

Resolving issues within the scope of the role and escalating problems as required

Providing proactive support to individuals in distress and making referrals to specific university services

Essential Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline, or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.

Minimum four (4) years’ of recent and related student academic advising experience in a university setting, preferably in a registrar’s office.

Experience interpreting, applying and advising on rules, guidelines, and procedures.

Experience and sound knowledge of best practices in advising and student services.

Experience working with and advising international students and students from diverse backgrounds.

Experience working with and advising academically at-risk students.

Advanced skills with Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

Advanced skills with ROSI/ACORN, Degree Explorer, or other similar enterprise database solutions/CRM systems.

Excellent oral and written communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.

Demonstrated time-management skills with the ability to effectively prioritize, multi-task and organize work, and meet tight deadlines while able to pay attention to detail.

Demonstrated skills and ability to provide effective guidance and advice to students in a responsive, empathetic, thoughtful, and discreet manner.

Demonstrated strong student service orientation and experience fostering equity, diversity and inclusion in a post-secondary environment.

Assets (Nonessential):

Experience working with Facultyof Arts and Science curriculum offerings and regulations.

USW Pay Band 12 -- $78,308 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $100,144. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
