Job Title: Occupational Health and Safety Advisor
Location: St. John's, NL
Position Type: 1 full-time position

Reporting to the Director of Operations, the Occupational Health and Safety Advisor has overall accountability in executing the Occupational Health and Safety mandate for the Association and ensuring compliance with all applicable legislative requirements. The incumbent will build a comprehensive OH&S practice for the ANC with a focus on risk management and employee education. The Advisor will also conduct investigations, recommending remedial recommendations and ensuring actions are undertaken to reduce the likelihood of future occurrence and continuance improvement.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Promote OH&S awareness and commitment by developing, implementing and maintaining a health safety and environmental program.
- Develop OH&S policies as well as reference documentation for the various divisions of the ANC and review them periodically to ensure they are up-to-date
- Conduct routine site inspections with divisions including hazard assessments, reviewing incident investigations and root cause determination, performing OH&S audits, and providing recommendations to the Operations Director driving continuous improvement.
- Develop and deliver Occupational Health and Safety training initiatives across the organization
- Establish an internal incident reporting process and conduct thorough investigations as needed. Develop corrective action plans to prevent recurrence
- Investigate employee OH&S concerns and recommend corrective/ preventive actions to Director of Operations
- Provide leadership both internally and with external contractors to ensure compliance with regulations and safe work practices on ANC sites
- Independently investigate potential safety hazards related to renovation projects and determine the necessary course of action to correct the safety issue (i.e engage outside contractor when needed).
- Conduct periodic on- site inspections with division's management
- Manage employee training records for compliance purposes
- Develop and maintain emergency response plans and procedures, including evacuation plans, first aid protocols, and communication protocol
- Stay up to date with OH&S regulations/ standards to ensure the organization is in compliance with all applicable laws; and recommend policy revisions/ reviews to comply with updated legislations
- Foster a culture of safety by promoting awareness, accountability, and a commitment to safety across the organization.
Qualifications and Experience
- A minimum of 2 or 3 year Diploma in Safety Engineering Technology or other acceptable education with 5-7 years of hands-on experience in area of Occupational Health and Safety
- Above average interpersonal skills
- Communication skills both in report writing and presentations
- Strong critical thinking and decision making skills
- In-depth understanding of provincial OHS legislation
- Proficient with Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace
Conditions of Employment
- Legal authorization to work in Canada.
- Flexible to work outside of standard core hours (Monday-Friday, 9 am -5 pm
- Drivers licences and access to own vehicle to facilitate site visits
- Position is subject to a satisfactory Certificate of Conduct and Vulnerable Sector Check from the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary.
