Description
The cook prepares and serves nutritious meals as outlined on menus in accordance with applicable food service and safety regulations. To prepare meals in accordance with Canada Food Guide and to maintain a clean and healthy living and working environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work within budget guidelines and be accountable for expenditures.
- Prepare ahead and secure meals for weekends.
- Prepare meal menu for one week in advance, ensuring a nutritious and well balanced diet.
- Make use of and decides on best use of resources, including donations to minimize waste.
- Follows guidelines for the safety and security of food and equipment and monitors practices to ensure adherence. This would include food rotation and expiration dates.
- Food preparation may include dietary and allergy requirements of some residents.
- The performance of the job requires a frequent amount of standing, moderate amounts of lifting, cutting, chopping, carrying supplies and walking.
- The performance of the job requires frequent attention to the preparation of food, reading recipes, adhering to safety procedures and regulations and occasionally ordering food.
- Being observant of weekly food flyer(s) to monitor sale items for budgetary purposes.
- Maintain a perpetual inventory for fresh food, dairy, meat, poultry, household supplies and canned goods.
- Perform a physical inventory on a quarterly basis.
- Perform spot inventory checks to avoid stock-outs.
- Prepare ahead and freeze meals to ensure backup for emergencies.
- Ensure all areas of responsibility are secured when leaving the kitchen and at the end of each shift keys and knives to on duty supervisor.
- Inform Residential Shift Supervisor of any required maintenance/ repairs and report all unusual situations and incidences to the Residential Shift Supervisor.
- Encourage an atmosphere of trust and respect while exercising control in the residence.
- Maintain and monitor a daily meal count.
- Staff must adhere to The Salvation Army Computer Access, Code of Conduct, Workplace Violence, Territorial Abuse, Whistleblower, and Respect in the Workplace policies.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Mandatory attendance at all staff meetings as required.
- Ensure the safety and security of the kitchen area and storeroom.
- Ensure cleanliness of kitchen and dining area during shift.
- Participate in all staff training seminars.
- Assist in the upkeep of the house where applicable.
- Maintain sanitary conditions in the Dietary Department through supervision of the cleaning of utensils, equipment, and all work areas.
- Practices all safety and sanitation rules and regulations and observes personal hygiene.
- Develops and maintains good interpersonal and communication skills and utilizes these skills in work with residents, visitors, and other staff.
- Maintains resident confidentiality and respects the residents' right to privacy.
HEALTH AND SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintains knowledge of current facility policies and procedures as stated in C0rrectional & Justice Services program manual, The Salvation Army "Communicable Disease Control," "Emergency Services Disaster" and working knowledge of "Fire & Safety"
Related and allied duties may be assigned from time to time as necessary to the operation of the facility.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Preference will be given to a person with experience in preparing meals for 20 plus persons, bulk purchasing of food and household supplies.
- Courses completed in the Culinary Arts would be considered an asset.
- Planning and organizational skills.
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time - some physical lifting/handling minimal exertion is required.
- WHIMIS training. (Knowledge of environmental hazards in a kitchen and workplace.)
- Knowledge of precautionary measures to be adhered to working with individuals with communicable diseases.
- Supervisory ability while working with a variety of personalities.
- Neat and clean in appearance. (gloves and hair nets whenever applicable)
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions without constant supervision.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Ability to pass "Reliability Status" level of clearance as per CSC directive.
Article #74 of "Statement of Work"
The CRF must specify the qualifications required to staff to perform the respective duties and responsibilities of each position. The requirements for the selection of supervisors, case workers, outreach workers or similar positions must include:
- The ability to understand the dynamics of offender behaviour and assess their needs and risks.
- The skills to counsel offenders, form effective relationships and gain trust.
- The skills to understand the use of authority and to intervene effectively in crisis situations.
- The ability to assist offenders in identifying and solving the practical problems involved in their successful reintegration into the community.
- The ability to assist offenders in identifying and obtaining the community services required for their successful reintegration.
- Skills in communicating effectively, both orally and in writing; and
- The ability to demonstrate cultural competence and respect for diversity.
