The Department of Writing at the University of Victoria invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, with a specialization in fiction, to commence July 1, 2024.

In accordance with the University’s Equity Plan and pursuant to Section 42 of the BC Human Rights code, the selection will be limited to members of the following designated group: Black people. The candidate’s qualifications, experience and overall market demand will determine a candidate’s final salary offer. The salary for this position includes a competitive salary range of $107,617 - $132,939. Who We Are:
Established in 1973, the Department of Writing is one of Canada’s oldest and most prestigious programs in writing, situated in an internationally recognized Faculty of Fine Arts. The department offers a BA, BFA and MFA in Writing, as well as a Professional Writing Minor in Journalism & Publishing. In addition to faculty expertise in fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, playwriting, screenwriting, and communications and journalism, important areas of creative and teaching focus also include Indigenous storytelling, queer and trans media arts, climate/eco writing, environmental journalism, arts and narratives of the African diaspora, hip-hop culture, interactive narrative and digital storytelling, the graphic novel, literary journalism, memoir, collaborative creation, and hybrid genres. Anti-racist and trauma-informed methodologies guide our writing workshops, and the department is committed to providing an inclusive and creative space for students. 

Our faculty teach a combination of workshop and lecture courses at the undergraduate and graduate level, supervise graduate students in our acclaimed MFA program, and contribute to the administration of the department and its role in the university community.
