In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health) patient and staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Reporting to the Manager, Health, Wellness and Safety, the Violence Prevention Specialist develops, coordinates, administers, and evaluates the Workplace Violence Prevention Program for Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health) to ensure a safe and healthy environment for patients, staff and visitors, and to achieve compliance with organizational standards and standards set out in legislative requirements.

This includes the coordination of Violence Risk Assessments, collaborating with other members of the Health, Wellness and Safety team (in particular the Prevention and Safety Advisors), regulatory agencies, promoting safe work habits and supporting leaders in the provision of safe and quality care meant to advance the Organization's Safety Culture, Strategic Plan, and regulatory compliance with all applicable Health & Safety legislation and Accreditation standards.

Works to engage staff, managers and senior leaders in the development of a positive safety culture in their area of responsibility.

Works collaboratively with area managers to monitor performance, safety reports and achievement of indicators and development of action plans to address areas of concern. Assists with the development of Workplace Violence Prevention policies, procedures and resources, and provides staff and managers with training and education in Workplace Violence Prevention.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Training And Experience

A level of education equivalent to a degree in a related health field, (Occupational Health & Safety, Nursing, Social Work) from a recognized institution is required, plus three (3) years' professional experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
