As a Thrift Shop Manager, you capably lead all aspects of shop operations and MCC’s market presence in Fort St. John, ensuring that your community’s thrift shoppers, volunteers, employees, and neighbours are cordially invited into MCC’s world-changing initiatives.

JOB SUMMARY Working in MCC BC’s Fort St. John Thrift Shop, located in Fort St. John, BC, and reporting to the Director, Social Enterprise, the Shop Manager is responsible for strategic, market and day-to-day operations leadership of the thrift shop. From the warehouse to the retail floor, you are responsible for your shop’s goals, plans and vision, and identifying and implementing activities to meet those objectives. This role includes general retail, people and facilities leadership, employee development and administration, hands-on retailing direction and assistance, back-of-house and inventory supervision and support, shop communications, and workplace safety. You’ll work directly with customers, volunteers, employees, donors, and members of the community in a manner that reflects Christian integrity, exemplifying the beliefs, values, and mission of Mennonite Central Committee British Columbia in the workplace.

This role participates in devotional and prayer times at MCC BC and/or at local church and faith gatherings, being prepared to answer inquiries about MCC BC’s mission and values. This role contributes to a positive workplace culture based on Christian beliefs and values, while modelling nonviolent peacemaking in the workplace, in the community and the church through respectful interactions with others. This role requires adherence to MCC BC’s Code of Conduct, policies, practices, and procedures, including Workplace Health and Safety.

How Much You Work:

This is a full-time salaried position working a minimum of 40 hours per week. Supporting special organizational initiatives may require working extended, after or holiday hours, as necessary.

When You Work:

Regular retail hours are 9:30 am – 5:00 pm, Monday to Saturday. This position requires supervisory opening and closing duties beyond regular retail hours. This role may require extended, after or holiday hours to support shop needs, issues, or special organizational initiatives, as necessary. • Where you work: this position is located at MCC BC’s Fort St. John Thrift Shop in Fort St. John, British Columbia. Support for the Shop’s pick-up and delivery service may require travel in an MCC BC or personal vehicle to locations across the Fort St. John area. On occasion, training and meetings may require travel to other MCC locations in British Columbia or across North America.

Physical Conditions & Requirements:

This position requires spending a significant portion of time on one’s feet, handling used goods, and lifting/moving heavy objects. It may also include up to 50% computer-monitor time.

Pace of work:

This position requires working in a comfortable but fast-paced retail shop/shipping & receiving environment. You may be met with multiple demands at once from customers, volunteers and employees, responding positively and adroitly throughout.

Interactions with Vulnerable Populations:

As a busy retail location, and following MCC BC safety and de-escalation protocols, this position may require effective and intense interactions with drug-addicted and street-involved persons, or individuals who are members of vulnerable populations.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, & ACCREDITATIONS

• Five years of relevant Thrift and/or retail experience
• Post-secondary studies in business management, or 3+ year experience in a supervisory, volunteer coordination or management role preferred
• Knowledge of the second-hand merchandise market & ability to assess quality of clothing, housewares, and furniture
• Current First Aid Training Certification (may be provided in first three months of employment)
• Verbal Intervention Training Certification (Nonviolent Crisis Intervention; may be provided in the first three months of employment) JOB REQUIREMENTS & LICENSING
• Satisfactory criminal record check with vulnerable sector (upon hire) • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record (abstract)
• Legally eligible to work in Canada

Key Responsibilities

RETAIL OPERATIONS

• Lead, monitor, support and participate in all aspects of shop operations, delegating to the Assistant Shop Manager or other team members as necessary
• Direct, delegate and oversee shop opening and closing procedures, as required
• Direct, delegate and oversee service and assistance directly to customers and donors on the retail floor, during donations intake, and at check-out
• Direct, delegate and oversee inventory receiving, pre-sorting, sorting, repair/preparation, and movement onto the retail floor or for appropriate disposal
• Direct and monitor merchandise quality and price control, including researching competitive price points and developing and updating quality criteria, price lists, and merchandise rotation schedules
• Direct, delegate and oversee inventory pick-up and delivery, as required • Direct, delegate and oversee inventory movement, stocking, placement, merchandising and maintenance, to achieve MCC BC standards of tidiness, organization and optimal sales impact
• Direct, delegate and oversee check out services and processes, including customer service and assistance, cash handling, till systems, balancing, and error handing
• Monitor, intervene and resolve disruptive, intense or challenging customer and visitor interactions and loss prevention situations, become a point of escalation as necessary
• Assess, rectify and improve all aspects of shop cleanliness, tidiness and safety conditions and standards
• Maintain records of customer, employee, volunteer, visitor or property incident reports related to any aspect of shop operations, submitting to internal and external authorities as required
• Monitor, plan and direct property and capital asset maintenance and upgrade activities

EMPLOYEE & VOLUNTEER LEADERSHIP

• Demonstrate MCC BC’s commitment to Christian mission, values, behaviours and approaches as defined in the qualifications, in all formal and informal interactions with any stakeholder
• In consultation with the Director, Social Enterprise, direct all aspects of shop employee operations, including structure, recruitment, training, scheduling, supervision, performance evaluation, and dismissal
• Identify and develop high-potential employees, building and executing development and mentoring plans as required
• Direct, delegate and oversee all aspects of shop volunteer operations for the store, including recruitment, training, scheduling, engagement and supervising of volunteers
• Form, develop and lead the shop leadership team, establishing routines and processes to optimize shop performance
• Provide onboarding, orientation and training to volunteers and employees, including team, shop, and organizational introductions; task orientation and training; use of necessary equipment; and workplace safety practices
• Direct, delegate, and supervise employee and volunteer activities, providing delegation, direction, correction, assistance and coaching as required
• Resolve conflict between employees and volunteers in a manner aligned with MCC BC values, seeking strategic and values alignment

STRATEGY, ADMINISTRATION, & MARKETING

• In consultation with the Director, Social Enterprise, develop the shop’s vision, goals, values, expectations, standards, and processes
• Oversee all aspects of shop administration, delegating where appropriate
• Maintain shop personnel, financial, and facility records, including data entry, reporting, approvals, and supporting activities, delegating where appropriate
• In consultation with the Director, Social Enterprise, create, monitor, and manage the shop’s annual budget, managing expenses and revenue-generating activities
• In consultation in with the Director, Social Enterprise, create, monitor, manage and report on the shop’s performance metrics, adjusting strategies and activities where appropriate to optimize shop performance
• In consultation with the Director, Social Enterprise, participate in shop, thrift network or MCC BC organizational meetings, projects and activities, including leading cross-functional initiatives, providing expertise or counsel, and proactively identifying opportunities for shop, thrift network and organizational improvement
• In consultation with the Director, Social Enterprise, develop, plan, and implement merchandising and marketing plans to increase sales, increase awareness, assist with recruiting, and positively stakeholder engagement
• Monitor, oversee, support and manage in online sales and social media accounts, as required
• Other duties as assigned.

Salary Details . $29.48 - $32.76 per hour. Placement within the salary range will be based on qualifications.
