EDUCATION ASSISTANT – Division Schools

We are looking to hire a temporary 20.0 hour per week Education Assistant to serve schools in the Lethbridge community and surrounding area. This assignment is to commence as soon as possible and terminate June 27, 2024. This position is covered by the CUPE 1825 collective agreement. Please quote Posting #3691295.
Under the direction of the Division English as an Additional Language Coordinator, and in collaboration with the Inclusive Education Liaison, the classroom teacher, and the Principal, the successful candidate will support programming for children who are learning English as an additional language. An understanding of cultural perspectives and the newcomer to Canada experience would be an asset. The ability to speak multiple languages would also be an asset. Confidentiality is of utmost importance in achieving the common good for all students. Through collaborative team-based structure, the Education Assistant will carry out tasks as assigned by the program supervisor(s). Possession of a valid Class 5 driver’s license with fewer than 7 demerit points and access to a reliable vehicle is required. This position requires weekly travel to Picture Butte, Coaldale, and Lethbridge schools.
EDUCATION : Education Assistant Certificate and/or Diploma or Rehabilitation Practitioner Certificate and/or Diploma or equivalent;
Special consideration will be given to candidates who have completed the Brain Story Certification through Alberta Family Wellness
WORK/VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE: At least one-year experience working with students with special programming needs;
Experience working with students new to Canada, supporting them in learning the English language and Canadian culture.
SPECIALIZED SKILLS: First Aid training is an asset;
Experience supporting students with speech language and/or foundational literacy skills;
Supporting Individuals through Valued Attachments Training (SIVA) Certificate is an asset;
Training and experience with augmentative communication systems;
Experience working on academic goals with students who have multiple barriers.
INTERPERSONAL SKILLS : Understands that it is of paramount importance to maintain confidentiality of all aspects of the school community;
Excellent communication skills and command of the English language;
Willing to participate in new learning opportunities;
Ability to work independently and take responsibility for individual student needs;
Ability to contribute in a collaborative team-based learning structure;
An understanding of cultural perspectives and the challenges faced by newcomers to Canada.
