The incumbent provides leadership to a diverse team of engineering and technical professionals and is responsible for engineering level operations support of NL Hydro's communications systems. This position also manages some shared support services utilized by the entire Operations Technology department.

Responsibilities:

The incumbent provides leadership and management in the completion of activities related to operations support of NL Hydro's communications system and work execution planning for the Operations Technology department. This includes the following activities:

• Ensuring effective tier three support is provided to the various operational groups responsible for the communications assets across NL Hydro, excluding any and all work normally completed by unionized employees.
• Maintaining awareness of industry trends and technologies through staff participation in conferences, online awareness sessions, memberships in technical societies, and other appropriate means.
• Ensuring proper technical support is provided to various planning, budgeting and project management groups when capital project integration into existing systems is required or would be beneficial.
• In consultation with asset management and operations personnel, recommending improvements to the operation of assets through capital projects, operating projects, and maintenance activities, and how these recommendations effect on the capital plan.
• Providing effective leadership to staff to permit them to carry out their responsibilities. Providing appropriate guidance, mentoring and coaching to a diverse team of engineers and other technical personnel of varying degrees of experience to ensure staff performance is optimized and performance issues are dealt with in an effective manner.
• Providing guidance, planning, and budgeting for training and development activities of staff to maintain the level of technical knowledge and skills needed to perform effectively in a safe and efficient manner.
• Maintaining strong working relationships with counterparts in other utilities, peers, clients, and suppliers to ensure activities are undertaken in a manner that maximizes value to the organization.
• Coaching staff in pursuing objectives that may be defined only in general terms, encouraging the employment of new or novel technologies, or the application of existing technologies and techniques in creative ways.
• Ensuring that acquisition, development, construction, and deployment of projects and technologies are aligned with divisional and corporate goals.
• Ensuring that personnel are managed effectively and efficiently as per corporate priorities and strategic directions; ensuring workloads are identified and scheduled in a manner that meets business requirements and demands.
• Maintaining awareness of Hydro's environmental policy and guiding principles, and corporate objectives, targets and programs; and the role of the Department and its employees in the management of environmental issues.
• Ensuring departmental participation in the Corporation's Safety and Health Program and Environmental Management Programs.
• Personally investigating any lost time incidents that occur within the Department.

Education and Experience:

Graduation from a recognized university with a Bachelor's Degree in Computer or Electrical Engineering; eligibility for membership in PEGNL as a P.Eng; and a minimum of seven (7) to ten (10) years' relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, are all requirements for this position. The incumbent shall have progressively responsible engineering experience since graduation preferably in power utility, project design, construction, administration, operations or maintenance.
