Job description

The Canadian Light Source Inc. (CLSI) is looking for a group leader (Lead) for our Accelerator Physics team. Within the Accelerator Operations and Development department, the Accelerator Physics team provides the scientific and technical leadership needed to operate and optimize the accelerator performance.

Who we are:

The Canadian Light Source (CLS) is a 3rd generation light source and a national research facility located on the University of Saskatchewan. CLS produces very bright light that is used to explore the laws of nature from the microscopic to the macroscopic dimensions and helps bolster innovation in many technical fields. Through its 22 beamlines, it serves national and international users working on everything from dinosaur skins to mine remediation and from cancer treatments to cutting-edge electronics.

Where we work and live:

Our facility is centrally located on the beautiful grounds of the University of Saskatchewan within walking distance of Saskatoon’s riverbank trails and close to campus amenities such as fitness facilities, restaurants, museums, and galleries. Saskatoon is a livable and growing city with plenty of green space and walking paths, a thriving arts community, and a lively music scene. The City, as well as the provincial and regional parks within driving distance, offer year-round options for outdoor activities and exploration.

What your responsibilities will include:

As the Lead of our Accelerator Physics team, you will oversee responsibilities within the Accelerator Physics team and provide supervisor, coaching, and mentorship to the group. This will include participating in the recruitment, performance management, and professional development of staff.

You will work together with the Accelerator Operation and Development (AOD) Manager, other Leads, and departments to develop the objectives for the maintenance, operation, upgrade, and development of the accelerator complex. Bringing your expertise in areas such as beam dynamic or lattice design, you will be central in proposing technical upgrades of components or systems and will provide remediation plans to address identified risk with specific systems to ensure high availability of beam for the user program.

We have a number of upcoming projects that you can apply your knowledge and experience to including:

Your work will support the overall development or integration of new technologies at the CLS. You are encouraged to develop new approaches in the field of Accelerator Physics through collaboration with other accelerator groups, guest researchers, students, and other stakeholders in Canada and internationally. We would also encourage and support qualified candidates to pursue an adjunct academic position with the University of Saskatchewan in the Department of Physics and Engineering Physics to further enhance our collaboration and directly support the next generation in this field

Through your work with our experienced team, we expect you will rapidly develop a thorough insight and expertise of the accelerator complex and become a “go to” resource in leading the resolution of operational issues.

Some travel is expected (e.g. vendors, suppliers and collaborators). It is also expected you will travel to showcase the work of the Accelerator Physics group to the international community to encourage collaboration with other accelerator complexes.

Occasional shift work for machine development and operation is expected.

What you would bring

This role is right for you if you enjoy collaborating with and providing leadership to other professionals and experts.

Qualifications you will need to succeed in this position:

Any of the following qualifications are considered an asset:

Compensation: Your starting salary will be based on your qualifications and experience. Our comprehensive benefits package includes four (4) weeks of vacation to start, health & dental benefits, life insurance, a pension plan, and a health spending account.

Should you be relocating to Saskatoon to take the job at CLS as part of your next career move, we also offer relocation assistance. Although housing prices in Saskatoon tend to be more reasonable as compared to other areas of Canada, we also provide a loan to support you with the purchase of a home.
