The Role
The EA Sports UFC team is looking for a talented and passionate Associate Character Director to lead and inspire our character team, a team that values innovation, creativity, collaboration, building teams and develop the most realistic and world-class characters in the industry. This role will report directly to our Character Art Director & Franchise Art Director.
As the Associate Character Director, you'll be responsible for establishing a unified visual language for characters, providing clear creative direction, staying abreast of the latest trends and technology, and working with the team to ensure deadlines are met. You'll also act as a craft leader, strengthening the art team's abilities and planning relevant training, mentoring new artists, providing feedback, and setting the bar for character art quality and consistency. We are dedicated to crafting player-first experiences powered by industry leading visuals along with cutting-edge technology and genre-defining innovation that sparks our players imaginations.
Your Responsibilities:
- Partner with the Franchise Art Director, Producers, Technical Artists, and Engineers on the UFC team.
- Collaborate with the Art Director to establish a cohesive visual language for characters and vanity.
- Ensure that your collaborators are in touch with the latest trends, methodology and technology.
- Partner with management and ensure that the deliverables deadlines are respected.
- Establish visual targets and prototypes through creative briefs, style guides, and content creation guides for your internal and external partners.
- Work as a craft leader to strengthen the art team's capabilities and expertise. Plan, organize, and introduce training that fits the team.
- Work as a people manager to support career growth and provide mentorship for all team members. Provide performance assessments for the environment artists.
- Set quality standards and style consistency for the character art in-game and provide artistic feedback and critiques with your team in art reviews.
Your Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience as a senior character lead, character art director, or other equivalent experience.
- A portfolio that illustrates your range of creativity in character art. Please provide a link to a portfolio on the resume.
- Experience working with Maya, Photoshop, ZBrush, Substance Painter and Marvelous Designer or equivalent alternatives.
- Experience with prototyping and collaborating with diverse teams consisting of technical artists, artists, engineers, and riggers.
- Knowledge of the latest industry-standard tools, workflows, and techniques including physically based rendering.
- Demonstrate an expert understanding of human anatomy, clothing construction (wrinkle behavior), proportion, silhouette, and topology, and how it relates to rendering and deformation.
- Demonstrate an understanding of a broad mix of character-related disciplines such as modeling, texturing, shading, rigging, and binding, animation, facial animation, and blend shapes.
- Experience translating art direction and product priorities through team settings & art reviews.
- The ability to interpret 2D reference material and scan data into 3D textured and surfaced models.
- The ability to document workflows to be used by our teams.
- Guide other artists on the team, sharing best practices and augmenting a healthy and dynamic team culture.

BC COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
The base salary ranges listed below are for the defined geographic market pay zones in these locations. If you reside outside of these locations, a recruiter will advise on the base salary range and benefits for your specific location.
EA has listed the base salary ranges it in good faith expects to pay applicants for this role in the locations listed, as of the time of this posting. Salary offered will be determined based on numerous relevant business and candidate factors including, for example, education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, and business or organizational needs.
BASE SALARY RANGES
• British Columbia (depending on location e.g. Vancouver vs. Victoria):
º $93,700 - $153,900 CAN Annually
Base salary is just one part of the overall compensation at EA. We also offer a package of benefits including vacation (3 weeks per year to start), 10 days per year of sick time, paid top-up to EI/QPIP benefits up to 100% of base salary when you welcome a new child (12 weeks for maternity, and 4 weeks for parental/adoption leave), extended health/dental/vision coverage, life insurance, disability insurance, retirement plan to regular full-time employees. Certain roles may also be eligible for bonus and equity.
