Job Description:

The Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, located in Deer Lake Park in the City of Burnaby, is seeking experienced Media Arts instructors to plan and facilitate programs in the Shadbolt’s Media Lab starting this April for students aged 9 – 12 in the courses listed below. Media Arts Instructors require a strong level of self-sufficiency and confidence with the specialized hardware and software used in the media lab. Instructors will work with the Media Arts Programmer to implement new courses for varying topics and age ranges.

Kid Tech, Thursday’s 4pm – 5:30pm, April 4th – June 20th:

Children are introduced to technology by using computers in a fun and creative way. Basic computer skills are taught using a mix of source material from DSLR cameras, PhotoBooth, and Internet image searches. Basic techniques are covered using animation, movie making, photo editing, sound design and 3D printing.

Stop Motion Animation: Multiple Techniques + Editing and Sound, Thursday’s 6:00pm – 7:30pm, April 4th – June 20th:

Students will learn a variety of stop motion animation techniques, such as pixilation, traditional hand drawn animation, cut-out animation and claymation. Students will learn how to shoot their work using DSLR cameras and Dragon frame animation software on iMac computers. Once the students have finished shooting their animation, techniques in image editing and sound design / mixing will be covered to complete their work.

Responsibilities:

Plan age-appropriate activities while teaching basic media skills. Be flexible with varying student skill levels within each class. Be adept at classroom management. Good customer service skills an asset when talking with parents of children or youth. The maximum number of students per class is currently 7.

Qualifications:

A degree or diploma with a film or media specialty, or the equivalent in relevant experience is required. In order to teach at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, a minimum of 100 hours of teaching experience as a Media Arts instructor (preferably with children/youth) is required. First aid certificate (First aid + CPR-C) is a condition of employment for all City of Burnaby instructors.

Please note that we prefer to have one instructor to teach both classes back to back on one day. Preference will be given to instructors who can teach multiple class styles.
