Job description
All students must be full time day students at a recognized secondary or post-secondary institution and be returning to full time attendance in fall of 2024.
Students must meet the basic requirements of the position. Should you be offered the position, with the City of Cornwall, you will be required to submit verification of school status.

Primary Duties:
- Responsible to the Supervisor, Aquatics & Programming for the direct supervision of Aquatic Staff and the overall operation of the facility. To ensure they are properly trained, to maintain staff motivation, to overlook teaching and guarding abilities, and to assist in the day-to-day operation of the Aquatic Program.
- Ensure that the provisions of the Health Protection and Promotion Act Ont. Reg. 565 Public Pools are adhered to.
- Responsible for the overall supervision of staff on a daily basis, to ensure they are guarding and teaching in a safe environment for the public.
- Ensure that all rules and regulations are carried out in a courteous and positive manner. To promote a professional public image and deal with problems which may arise. Provides information and advises Supervisor, Aquatics & Programming accordingly.
- Be prepared to perform water rescues, first aid, current resuscitation methods and other emergency procedures when required.
- Responsible to unlock all doors necessary to operate the pools, and to relock at the end of the day. This should be done approximately 15 minutes before any program is to begin.
- Ensure that the necessary safety equipment and first-aid supplies are available and in proper working condition at all times.
- Prepare and conduct and actively participate in daily in-service training sessions and staff development programs. To be able to cope with and assume responsibility during an emergency situation.
- Responsible to wear and to ensure that staff is properly dressed with uniform which includes one piece bathing suit and shorts (female) and appropriate length bathing suit shorts (male), lifeguard shirt, hat and whistle.
- To regulate pool checks and guard rotations, and ensure the required number of Lifeguards are on duty.
- Guard or instruct when necessary.
- Attend staff meetings and assist with marketing swimming registrations.
- Schedule and monitor specialized aquatic programs at the facility, ie. (Synchro, speed swimming, and diving, etc.) To organize competitions when requested.
- Responsible for performing and scheduling daily maintenance for the pool system and washrooms.
- Ensure that the number of patrons, accident reports, and water tests are recorded daily on the proper forms and maintained on a regular basis.
- Assist in completing end of summer evaluations of staff with the Supervisor, Aquatics & Programming.
- Responsible to complete a written report of the facility statistics & maintenance at the end of the summer and present to the Supervisor, Aquatics & Programming.
- Attend clinics to upgrade technical knowledge and recertify qualifications when required.
- Ensure that the Swim levels are progressively evaluated and crests are awarded to the candidate at the time of completion.
- Ensure that worksheets are presented to Supervisor, Aquatics & Programming at the completion of each session.
- To represent the City of Cornwall as a coach or active participant in annual lifeguard competition. To further develop and increase life guarding skills and first-aid treatment. The lifeguard competition is a MANDATORY requirement for summer lifeguards.
- Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor, Aquatics & Programming or Manager, Recreation.
