Founded in 1910 and located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Mount Royal University grew into a vibrant college in the 1930s and became a mid-sized university in 2009. Mount Royal University’s Facilities Management department is responsible for the planning, development, construction, design, operation, maintenance, safety, security and stewardship of all the buildings, infrastructure, sites and services within Mount Royal's campus community. Through efficient and environmentally sustainable operation, we offer grounds, custodial, building operations, facilities planning, security services and engineering professional services to provide a physical environment that supports and enhances our academic space for students and staff. Our team of professionals are dedicated to providing customer service excellence. Our staff respond to daily service requests and emergency / priority situations as needed.

This leadership position entails a mix of independent and team-based work, overseeing day-to-day operations in Building Operations, Environmental Services, and Grounds. The role involves collaborative efforts within the Facilities Management Leadership Team to shape strategic direction and address operational challenges. As a key representative of the institution, the Director engages with various committees, associations, and external groups, requiring effective communication skills and the ability to navigate complex relationships with Federal, Provincial, and local Municipal agencies, companies, and contractors.

The role demands a high level of decision-making and discretion, especially in emergency response planning and compliance matters. The position involves a blend of managerial responsibilities, including staff supervision, budget planning, and engagement with technical aspects of facilities management. The position holds a high level of financial oversight and is responsible for an annual operation budget of $5,000,000 - $7,000,000. The position necessitates a thorough grasp of various trades, building construction, and environmental factors, reflecting a high degree of work complexity.

• Provides leadership, strategic direction, and day to day oversight to Building Operations, Environmental Services and Grounds.
• Ensures legislative and code compliance regarding building standards and Occupational Health and Safety.
• Create, compile and review performance metrics, surveys, statistics, trending, metering, and data analysis in efforts to continually identify opportunities to remove waste and add value to the function and operations of the departments.
• Represents Operational interests in new construction and renovation projects.
• Plans and oversees the budgets of the departments and conducts detailed variance analysis as required.
• Identifies opportunities to streamline and improve service delivery.
• Ensures optimal performance by setting and monitoring standards related to environmental, sustainability, energy management, cleanliness and quality control.
• Provides technical and strategic support to the Associate Vice President of Facilities Management in planning and development, operation and maintenance of existing and new spaces.
• Collaborates in developing and refining the strategic direction of Facilities Management and the Institution.
• Represents Facilities Management in committees, associations, and collaborative networking groups outside of MRU with the purpose of promoting and learning subject material related to leading edge technological advancements, innovation, sustainable and safe operations of facilities in efforts to continually improve and enhance the Institution.
• Coordinate project and operational activities with Faculty and other departments outside of Facilities Management to remove/reduce risk and mitigate negative impact to the operations of the Institution.
• Conduct regular assessments of current facilities and recommend improvements and upgrades to enhance functionality and user experience.
• Interprets and takes all reasonable steps towards compliance with Municipal, Provincial, and Federal regulations concerning environmental protection, fire and electrical codes, safety, boiler and pressure vessel codes and other codes and regulations which may apply; responsible for a program of regular inspection of facilities, equipment and systems.
• Engages as a representative of Facilities Management in the Emergency Response Planning process
• Serves as an active member of the EOC (Emergency Operations Center).

• University Bachelor Degree
• 8 - 10 years of directly related experience

Skills and Additional Requirements

• 8+ years in a management position with technical responsibilities along with an additional 5-8 years of hands-on operational experience is required in order to understand the technical and day to day operations of facilities
• Exceptional knowledge in building construction, architectural materials, mechanical and electrical systems design
• Experience writing reports, making presentations, and working with regulatory bodies is essential.
• Ability to work collaboratively at all levels of the organization
• Demonstrated ability to take initiative, work with limited direction and devise operational processes from broad objectives
• Exceptional judgment and problem solving skills
• Excellent leadership, communication, and teamwork skills

Salary: $120,662 – $166,513 per annum
