Reporting to the Managing Director, Enterprise Data and AI, the Director, Data Delivery is accountable for leading a team of data specialists that design and develop scalable and reliable data solutions across the entire data supply chain at Air Canada. This role will work in collaboration with Data Product leaders, business SMEs and technology leaders to ensure that data initiatives are delivered as per agreed timelines, budget and quality levels in order to drive business value.
The purpose of this role is to own the end-to-end Data Delivery organization at Air Canada. The leader will be a guide and coach for the Data Delivery Team to achieve the vision outlined for the team, namely:
- Leverage and improve on our integrated tech stack to achieve enterprise objectives for data;
- Deliver value using a sustainable and scalable operating model that promotes wide adoption of data assets;
- Implement robust data governance practices and standards;
- Build a strong talent pool with the requisite capabilities and domain knowledge to catalyze data value.
The Data Delivery Team is comprised is comprised of a mix of data solution architects, data engineers, data modelers, data analysts and delivery leads who work together in an Agile, Data POD structure to deliver projects and enhancements to specific business lines within Air Canada. Data PODs are comprised of a mix of Air Canada staff and contractors comprised of 60+ team members.
Responsibilities :
The Director, Data Delivery will lead and drive the architecture, development, and continual improvement of the underlying data platform that informs and drives data-based decision making at Air Canada. Key responsibilities fall into the four following categories:
Data Delivery
- Design, build and drive overall strategy, methodology, and roadmaps for systems and capabilities required to produce and maintain our core data assets, in a highly iterative environment.
- Lead data warehousing initiatives to provide consistent, clean, and integrated data that enable Users to use the resulting information to make more informed decisions and drive our analytics and AI initiatives.
- Ensure all delivered data solutions align to data management standards and policies.
- In a “hands-on” capacity, define or influence system, technical and application architectures for major areas of development and provide expertise as a technical resource to solve complex business issues that translate into data integration and data solution designs.
Processes and Tools
- Ensure all data delivery processes are documented and team members are suitably trained on the processes.
- Continuously assess the effectiveness of existing processes and iterate/improve on these processes when there is an opportunity.
- Continuously assess the effectiveness of existing data delivery tools and evaluate other tools on the market and create business cases and adoption plans in order to drive improvements in efficiency and quality.
- Stay up-to-date with emerging trends and technologies in the data space, and leverage that knowledge to identify new opportunities and best practices that can improve the company's data capabilities
People & Relationships
- Proactively manage data team resource capacity in line with known business demand.
- Develop and nurture data team talent, including implementing training, upskilling, and mentorship plans.
- Ensure that the team maintains a high level of competence and operational excellence in delivery and communication.
- Build strong relationships with teams and stakeholders to enable effective dialogue exchange between departments.
Budget & Financial
- Build and adhere to yearly departmental budgets
- Provide estimates for each new Data initiative and ensure project delivery performance is in in-line the committed budget.
- Work with the Project Management Office (PMO) to provide updates on current project performance with respect to current and remaining project spend.
- Work with Strategic Procurement to negotiate Vendor agreements including financial aspects to ensure any outsourced work maximizes value.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
- 10+ years of experience in data architecture and data delivery, with a proven track record of delivering complex data solutions.
- In-depth knowledge of data architecture, data modeling, data integration, and data delivery technologies and best practices.
- Experience with data governance and data management frameworks and methodologies
- Strong quantitative and analytics skills, as well as business acumen and sound judgment
- Experience with the Microsoft Azure data ecosystem
- Experience designing a large data lake and lake house experience, managing data flows that integrate information from various sources into a common pool implementing data pipelines based on the ETL model
- Experience with common data languages (e.g. Python, Scala) and data warehouses, specifically Snowflake and Databricks
- Understanding of event-driven and/or streaming workflows with tools like Kafka and Spark
- Aptitude with ETL concepts and tools, including experience ingesting, processing, and transforming a variety of data at scale
- Proficiency with SQL and NoSQL databases, data warehousing concepts, and cloud-based analytics database (e.g. Snowflake or Redshift) administration
- Experience with Visualization Tools like Power BI, WebFocus, Dataiku and Alteryx.
- Experience with agile methodologies and working in cross-functional teams
- Structured, big-picture thinker who can clearly articulate ideas
- Independent self-starter and leader with a can-do attitude
- Ability to handle multiple concurrent projects while working independently and in teams of all sizes with representatives from a diverse set of technical backgrounds
- Strong leadership skills, with a proven track record in developing and nurturing data engineering talent, including implementing training, upskilling, and mentorship plans
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with business and technology leaders
- Good financial acumen including experience with building budgets
- Occasional travel required
