Under the direction of the Water Metering Foreman, Water and Sewer Division – Engineering and Operations Department, the incumbent will join a team that performs work on the City of Fredericton water and sewer systems, which can be physically strenuous in nature, and involves the use of hand tools and/or manually operated equipment. The incumbent will perform work of a technical nature involving the installation of water metering equipment, maintenance of the City’s Cross Connection Control (CCC) program and liaise with the plumbing community to ensure City standards and specifications are met. The incumbent will work independently, show initiative, and exercise tact, judgment, and discretion.
Assignments will require the operation of light vehicles. The incumbent may also work under supervision and receive daily instruction.
Position Summary:
- Aid in managing a cross connection control program.
- Trouble Shoot & address issues as they arise, or as directed by the Water Metering Foreman.
- Install water meters and wireless meter reading devices in new and existing buildings.
- Install/replace backflow devices, survey buildings for possible cross connections and administer solutions.
- Update all associated water meter, bulk water, and cross connection control databases.
- Maintain cross connection control certification, maintain Plumbing Red Seal designation, help train other staff on meter technology and cross connection control devices.
- Water meter reading throughout the City of Fredericton interacting with customers and citizens.
- Performing other duties as required.
Education and Experience
Red Seal Designation in Plumbing combined with:
- Minimum of five (5) years experience in the plumbing field;
- Extensive knowledge in cross connection control devices, plumbing systems, computer databases, and water meters;
- Valid NB Class V driver’s license
- Certification as a cross connection control device tester
Knowledge and Desired Skills
- Valid NB Class 3 driver’s license with E endorsement (air brakes) will be considered an asset.
- Ability to follow instructions accurately as issued by a foreman or supervisor.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary in the area of work assignments.
- Well developed interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills are required.
- The ability to work within a team environment to accomplish organizational goals.
- Ability to work after hours, function as an on-call employee, and willingness to work shifts (including a regular night shift if required).
- Oral competency in both official languages will be considered an asset.
Successful applicant will be required to provide a criminal record check, vulnerable sector check and a driver’s abstract.
