Job description
Second Street Fund Inc. and related entities own and manage a rental property portfolio consisting of over forty residential multi-family, commercial and retail projects. The properties are located in Alberta, BC, Northwest Territories, Utah, and California. The company also invests in non-real estate endeavors.
An incumbent in this position is primarily responsible for the management of the accounts payable team as well as assisting with the day-to-day operational accounting functions. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: training of accounts payable clerks, weekly EFT and cheque runs; verification of WCB compliance; as well as assisting with various ad hoc projects.
The Senior Accountant will have solid technical skills, specifically in accounting, financial reporting, internal controls and processes and corporate governance. They will be a quick learner with strong attention to detail, and the ability to work and collaborate as part of a team. This position reports to the Finance and Accounting Manager for Midwest Property Management.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervise and train the accounts payable team;
- Ensures all WCB clearance letters and Insurance certificates are maintained/updated before releasing payments to trades;
- Assist in the detailed review of weekly cheque runs - work with the accounts payable team to assist in proper coding of invoices;
- Ensures the vendor database in property management software (MRI) is maintained properly;
- Performs accounting functions pertinent to the preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual reporting including high-level adjusting journal entries, reconciliation of all sub-ledger accounts and assisting with any required reporting needs of ownership;
- Review Property reports and Operating Statements for all portfolios;
- Assists in the preparation of the year-end file for submission to the Auditors, including working papers and analysis;
- Review the Company's cyclical property expenditures to ensure the capital asset policy is followed in accordance with the applicable accounting standards and tax regulations;
- Develops and documents various business processes;
- Other projects and activities as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
- Experience training, coaching and mentoring team members;
- Working knowledge of accounting procedures, practices, and methods;
- Ability to analyze and present financial results with ease;
- Advanced computer skills (especially in excel and spreadsheet applications) and business software;
- Strong analytical and technical accounting skills;
- High-level of attention to detail;
- Ability to provide and express information in a clear, concise manner, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, trades, and members of the general public.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
· A minimum of 2 years experience in an AP position with supervisory experience preferred
· A CPA, along with accounting experience as a corporate accountant, in public practice, or real estate industry is considered an asset
