Grid Electrification Engineer
Are you ready for your next challenge? Hatch continues to expand its Smart Grid team advising utilities on the impacts of grid modernization, digital utility solutions, electrification, advanced grid operations, microgrids, and distribution system design.
The increased electrification of transportation and heating solutions is creating uncertainty in utility planning and will require changes to system design, capital planning, protection & control, monitoring, and solutions to overcome other operational challenges. Concurrently, fleet, municipal, transit, and rail vehicles are also electrifying requiring additional planning & design, creative solutions to manage feeder and grid-level demand, and likely new business models. Incorporating DERs such as solar and battery storage are becoming linked to large scale electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Technological advancements (e.g. Vehicle-to-building/grid, smart invertors, new batteries, utility control of smart chargers, and communication system advancements) will play a critical role in supporting grid reliability as electrification increases.
Hatch’s Grid Electrification team focuses on helping clients resolve all these challenges supporting utilities and large fleet owners with gap assessments, multi-year roadmaps, business case developments for specific initiatives, specification & requirements creation, technology evaluations, and entire program and advanced technology execution, including engineering design and project management. The team works alongside, and draws expertise from, the Grid Modernization, Advanced Grid Operations, Digital Utility Services, Hybrid Power, and T&D Design teams.
We work alongside our clients to modernize their grids to meet the challenges of today and the future. Hatch is looking for a Grid Electrification Engineer to contribute to project designs and/or project manage opportunity development and project execution.

Project Delivery Responsibilities may include:
• Contributing to and/or leading grid electrification projects such as those listed above
• Solve challenging problems pertaining to grid electrification designs plans, specification definition, or project/program implementations
• Provide electrical design services to meet project deliverables
• As project manager, direct project resources, and with the support of other technical leads as applicable, be accountable for project deliverables, while also ensuring quality, timeliness, and alignment with client expectations
• Work alongside and support delivery of projects from other Hatch teams including Hatch’s renewable energy, energy storage, power system studies, advisory, technology, urban solutions, and/or sustainable transportation teams
• Coordinate with utilities and other stakeholders to collect information and contribute to technical communications
• Assess and specify grid reliability and other supply performance metrics

Business Development Responsibilities may include:
• Participate in Bid / No Bid discussions for potential opportunities
• Support the creation of proposal documents, including scope, schedule, and level of effort estimates
• Work with the marketing team to establish / update marketing & client facing materials, as applicable
• Senior resources will be expected to lead business development initiatives to expand the team’s project pipeline
• Senior and Intermediate resources will be expected to contribute to marketing campaigns, attend and speak at industry conferences, and present to clients to advance leads and secure opportunities
• All team members are expected to develop thought leadership materials for publication in industry publications, at conferences, or on applicable social media platforms

Required Qualifications:
• Engineer should have an undergraduate degree in engineering, preferably electrical; or an electrical technologist on track to earn their P.Eng.
• Experience in grid electrification specifically, at an engineering, consulting firm, or electric utility
• Minimum of 3 years of related professional experience, ideally with an engineering, consulting, or electric utility
• Design experience with electrified vehicle charging infrastructure, utility connection requirements, electrical protection systems, energy management systems, energy storage and PV system designs
• Familiar with design software such as AutoCAD or MicroStation
• Comfortable with reading, interpreting, and creating utility single line and electrical plan view drawings
• Strong understanding of the challenges that utilities are facing regarding increased electrification of transportation and heating systems

Additional Preferred Qualifications:
• Professional Engineering licence, or an EIT nearly ready to qualify for such licence
• Familiar with benefits and challenges of vehicle-to-building and vehicle-to-grid technologies, from a utility perspective
• Familiar with communication technologies and protocols for charging infrastructure
• Substation design experience
• Experience with options identification, techno-economic assessments, system modeling, and utility fleet electrification needs
• Software tool familiarity with the following, or comparable:
• System Modeling such as CYME-Dist, Synergi, Homer, and PSCADD
• Programming such as Python, Matlab, VBA

Occasional domestic and international travel throughout North America for client, conference, and site visits is required. Candidate must be available and able to travel to such events with reasonable notice.
