Job description
Valard Construction LP is currently seeking local experienced Hydrovac Operator in Concord, Ontario. Valard Construction LP is Canada’s premier utility contractor, as well as head of the Valard Group of Companies AND part of the Quanta Group, the largest electrical power contractor in North America. Valard has full-service capabilities for transmission, distribution, substations, foundations, telecommunications, and renewable energy.
Reporting to the Civil Construction Manager/Hydrovac Coordinator the Hydrovac Operator will be responsible for safe operation and daily maintenance of the hydrovac units. The ideal candidate will have a minimum 2 years’ experience with tri-drive/18-speed manual transmissions. Preference will be given to those with experience on either the Vactor HXX/QX or Westech Wolf units. Previous experience with hydro-related rehabilitation work (OH/UG) is highly preferred.
The position will be based out of our Concord Office; LOA is not offered for local work in the GTA.
Requirements
- Safely perform hydrovac excavation around utilities on job sites across Ontario. Follow all legislation and regulations set out by the Occupational Health & Safety Act and Valard Policies & Standard Operating Procedures
- Troubleshoot issues and equipment, including preventative maintenance.
- Perform pre-trip inspections & equipment inspections by following company policies and procedure for routine maintenance.
- Proper use and inspection of bonding equipment
- Perform general housekeeping to ensure equipment is clean and operating properly.
- Interpret locates, stakeouts, drawings and schematics.
- Knowledge and understanding of traditional locates and ALA.
- Ensure all daily task reporting requirements are fulfilled.
- Coach, monitor and mentor less experienced hydrovac operators and swampers.
- Work as a member of the team by assisting other members when required.
- Complete client’s site-specific training as required.
- Ability to communicate effectively with managers, peers, and clients.
- Ability to operate equipment independently and safely.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have a valid DZ licence (minimum) and must be maintained in good standing through employment with Valard.
- Minimum 2 years of hydrovac excavation experience.
- Ability to work independently while following job requirements.
- Must have and maintain a clean driver’s abstract and CVOR.
- Able to meet the physical requirements of the position which involves sitting, standing, bending, climbing, lifting (up to 75 pounds), working at heights, in confined spaces and in all types of weather conditions (rain, snow, heat etc.), remote hose.
- Values safe work practices and holds others accountable for working in a safe manner.
- Hard working, team-player attitude with attention to detail and above average customer service skills.
- Candidates must be available for on-call work and occasional evenings/weekends.
- Must live within daily driving distance to/from GTA.
- MUST be able to operate tri-drive vehicles.
- MUST be able to operate 18-speed manual transmission.
- MUST have experience with Vactor HXX/QX and/or Westech Wolf hydrovac trucks.
- MUST be willing to join CUSW union.
