Drug Access Navigator

Permanent Full Time position

 

 

The Drug Access Navigator (DAN) acts as a resident expert on medication cost reimbursement and coverage for Outpatient Chemotherapy services. Their primary responsibility is to facilitate and coordinate the submission of funding requests for oncology patients. As an integral member of the interdisciplinary team, you will gather required information for completion and submission of applications serving as a centralized point of contact for oncology physicians, nurses, social workers, pharmacists and patients. The DAN will be actively involved with government, community based and private agencies that provide financial assistance for medications, serving as an expert advisor to patients, families and health care providers regarding medication access and reimbursement.

 

Contribute to safe, quality care by
• Maintain expert level of knowledge of all government and private oncology funding programs, Cancer Care Ontario recommendations and oncology protocols
• Gather required information for completion and submission of applications to available funding programs
• Determine appropriate sources of funding available to patients requiring drug access assistance
• Access, submit and manage funding requests for oncology patients
• Complete regular follow up on submitted applications and communicate their status with care team members and patients as required
• Act as central point of contact for care team members, patients and pharmacy personnel on all drug access issues for the outpatient oncology program
• Ensure appropriate procurement, storage, inventory, control, and relevant record keeping associated with this supply of medications
• Work on behalf of the patients with insurance providers or other drug assistance programs to assist with enrollment, exception requests, compassionate programs, reassessments, appeals, and advocacy for drug coverage

 

What must you have?
•College diploma from a recognized Pharmacy Technician Program with minimum 2 years experience in a hospital and or outpatient chemotherapy pharmacy
• Other Regulated Health Care Professional with minimum 2 years experience as a reimbursement specialist/drug access navigator

 

What else do you bring?
• Excellent working knowledge of Cancer Treatments, health system infrastructure, special access programs and third-party insurance plans
• Familiarity with oncology terminology would be an asset
• Proven proficiency with computers including word processing, spreadsheet and database applications and email systems
• Excellent verbal and written communication, organizational and interpersonal skills
• Skilled in following specific instructions with a high degree of accuracy
• Demonstrate the skills of an excellent team player
• Demonstrates critical thinking skills to deal with demanding situations and fluctuating workloads
• Ability and experience demonstrated through positive performance appraisals and work history
• Excellent ability to keep meticulous records and time management skills
• Demonstrated experience and interest in ongoing development/learning
• Proven attendance record.
• Demonstrates understanding and complies with patient and staff safety policies and procedures that foster a safe and inclusive environment for all.
• Ability to perform the essential duties of the job.
• Effectively uses empathy in interactions with others.

Preferably, your profile also includes:
• Previous experience with Drug Access Navigation strongly preferred
• Member of Oncology Drug Access Navigators of Ontario (ODANO) preferred
• Proficiency navigating EPIC (or other electronic medical record) would be an asset
