Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications to create an Eligibility List for the position of Hostler in the Transit Fleet division of Halifax Transit. Vacancies that are not filled internally will be filled from this Eligibility List. This Eligibility List will be used to fill future vacancies for Permanent Part Time Hostlers. The Eligibility List created is effective for 6 months and may be extended as required.

Preference will be given to candidates who self-identify as African Nova Scotians and Other Racially Visible Persons, Women in occupations or positions where they are underrepresented in the workforce, Indigenous/Aboriginal People, Persons with Disabilities and 2SLGBTQ+ Persons. Under the direction of the Superintendent Transit Fleet, the Hostler performs the necessary duties to prepare and ensure all buses are ready for the following day service. Duties include but are not limited to cleaning, fueling, maintaining fluids and performing special cleaning as necessary. Associated paperwork and data entry are required. The Hostler is responsible to perform this work following all relevant safety procedures. The Hostler must possess a valid driver’s license, acceptable driver’s abstract and a willingness to obtain a Class 2 driver’s license

Education and Experience: Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities: Physical Demands: None - Not at All; Occasional - 1 to 2.5 hrs.; Frequent - 2.5 to 5.5 hrs
Standing – Frequent
Walking – Frequent
Bending – Occasional to Frequent
Squatting – Occasional
Lifting – Occasional to Frequent (Up to 25 lbs. (11.3 Kg), with assistance)
Pushing/Pulling – Occasional to Frequent (Up to 50 lbs. (22.6 Kg), with assistance)
Carrying – Occasional (up to 25 lbs. (11.3 Kg), with assistance)

Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants may be required to complete an employment security screening check

Please NOTE: An Eligibility list will also be established from this competition. Vacancies that are not filled internally will be filled from this Eligibility list. The list will be created and is effective for 6 months and may be extended, as required

Please note - The successful candidate must attain certification in Emergency First Aid within the first six (6) months from hire date. The Employer will bear the full cost of certification requirements. The Emergency First Aid certification must be maintained while employed in this position.”

Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge. Candidates, who are selected for testing, may be tested in a group setting, scheduled at the employer's discretion

WORK STATUS: Permanent Part-time . Eligibility list will be effective for up to 6 months and may be extended, as required

HOURS OF WORK: All shifts start at 7:00 pm and end at 3:00 am. Working days are picked based on operational requirements. Must work holidays that fall on scheduled work days

SALARY: $28.14 per hour as per the Collective Agreement between the Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 508 and Halifax Regional Municipality

WORK LOCATION: Burnside Transit Center, 200 Ilsley Avenue, Dartmouth, NS or Ragged Lake Transit Center, 110 Grassy Lake Drive, Halifax, NS

CLOSING DATE: Applications will be received up to 11:59pm on Tuesday, March 19th. Applications will be reviewed regularly up to the closing date
